National Smile Month: Oral Health Before Cosmetic Dentistry
National Smile Month can be a useful reminder to review oral health, but a calendar campaign is not a reason to rush into cosmetic dental treatment. Prevention, diagnosis and informed consent come before a “smile transformation”.
Start with oral health
A dental examination should assess teeth, gums, bite, decay, cracks, existing restorations and oral hygiene. Pain, swelling, bleeding gums or a damaged tooth may require treatment before whitening, veneers or other cosmetic options.
Compare treatment choices
Whitening changes colour but not shape. Bonding or veneers can alter selected surfaces; crowns cover more tooth structure; implants replace missing teeth in appropriate cases. Each has different preparation, maintenance, limitations and risks. The NHS dental treatment guide provides general descriptions of common options.
Revitalize planning
Confirm the contracted dentist and clinic, diagnosis, alternatives, material, number of teeth, laboratory work, bite review, aftercare and written quotation. A holiday activity, discount or photograph should not determine treatment.
