What is a lens replacement surgery?

Lens replacement removes the natural lens inside the eye and inserts an IOL. Cataract surgery replaces a cloudy lens affecting vision. Refractive lens exchange, sometimes called clear lens exchange, uses the same basic operation primarily to reduce reliance on glasses when cataract is not the main reason.

Laser vision correction, including LASIK, reshapes the cornea and leaves the natural lens in place. A phakic lens implant also leaves that lens in place. These procedures have different suitability criteria and risks; they are not interchangeable.

Published UK reference, checked 24 October 2026: Moorfields Private lists approximately £4,500–£5,500 per eye for RLE, including take-home medication and one post-operative appointment, plus a £195 initial consultation. Its stated prices apply to booking through its New Patient Enquiry team; direct-consultant prices may differ, and the consultation price excludes previous refractive-surgery cases. This is one UK provider’s published example, not a UK average or a Revitalize price.

Are you a candidate for lens replacement surgery?

Assessment considers your prescription, lens clarity, retinal and optic-nerve health, cornea, eye pressure, previous surgery and visual goals. Reading difficulty with age, a high prescription or being unsuitable for laser treatment does not automatically make lens replacement appropriate.

Tell the surgeon about previous retinal problems, strong short-sightedness, diabetes, glaucoma, dry-eye symptoms and medicines. Discuss the individual balance of benefit and risk, especially retinal-detachment risk in highly short-sighted eyes. Glasses or contact lenses may remain the better choice.

Think about the activities that matter most: small print, computer work, driving at night or sport. Explain how willing you are to wear glasses for some tasks and how you would feel about halos or reduced contrast. These preferences help guide the lens discussion, alongside clinical findings.

TECHNIQUES

Lens replacement surgery options we offer

The operation and the implanted lens are different choices. Cataract surgery describes why the natural lens is removed; multifocal and trifocal describe lens optics. A trifocal is one type of multifocal IOL.

Monofocal: targets one main focusing distance; glasses are usually needed for other distances.
Multifocal or trifocal: aims to reduce glasses use across more distances. Trifocal designs include near, intermediate and distance focus, with possible halos and glare.
Extended depth of focus (EDOF): generally extends the distance-to-intermediate range; reading glasses may still be needed.

Lens replacement surgery recovery timeline

Immediately after treatment: follow the clinic’s discharge instructions and arrange help with travel. Vision may be blurred and the eye uncomfortable; use prescribed drops as directed and attend the planned review.

During the first days and weeks: recovery varies between eyes and patients. Improvement may begin early, while vision and comfort continue to change. Follow your surgeon’s instructions about eye protection, washing, swimming, lifting, exercise and driving. Do not drive until the clinician confirms it is appropriate and your vision meets the applicable standard.

Over the following months: adaptation to an IOL can take time, particularly with multifocal optics. Report persistent or worsening symptoms. Glasses, further assessment or additional treatment may still be needed; a fixed final-result date cannot be promised.

Planning your return to the UK

Before booking, obtain a written schedule for both eyes, required reviews and the earliest return date the surgeon considers suitable. Confirm who provides UK follow-up, where it takes place, which examinations are included and what additional care costs. Remote contact cannot replace an examination when one is needed.

SAFETY FIRST

Risks & safety

Lens replacement is surgery inside the eye. Possible problems include infection, inflammation, raised eye pressure, swelling, lens-position problems, residual prescription and retinal detachment. Serious permanent loss of vision is possible. Ask the operating surgeon about your individual risk and how complications would be treated.

Glare, halos, blurred vision or discomfort can affect daily activities and night driving. Multifocal optics generally involve more optical side effects than monofocal lenses. Symptoms may improve with adaptation, but they do not always disappear.

The removed natural lens cannot develop a cataract again. However, the capsule behind the implant can become cloudy later, called posterior capsule opacification (PCO). A clinician may recommend YAG laser treatment; this is different from cataract returning. Other eye conditions can also affect vision over time.

Seek urgent eye assessment for sudden loss or worsening of vision, new flashes or a sudden increase in floaters, a curtain or shadow, or increasing pain and redness. Contact the surgical team or local emergency eye service promptly rather than waiting for a routine review.

I was quite apprehensive beforehand, but the moment I met the surgeon and the team, all my worries disappeared. They were absolutely incredible , professional, reassuring, and genuinely caring.

We stayed at the Mandarin resort, which was lovely overall, and although there are a few small areas that could be improved, the experience surrounding the surgery itself was exceptional. Professor Ahmets hands gave me complete confidence, and the nurses were attentive, kind, and consistently supportive.

Our chaperones were brilliant throughout the stay. We had a few different ones, but Abbie supported my husband and me for most of our time there, and she was truly outstanding. Teona was also wonderful at the resort and Lali
The rest of the staff appear to be kind too.

We really enjoyed our time in Izmir exploring the bazaar, trying different restaurants, seeing the local sights, and having moments of proper relaxation too. The only area I feel could benefit from improvement is the food at the resort. Because it’s quite a distance from other places to eat, having more substantial meal options would make a big difference, especially for Brits recovering from surgery who often need protein-rich, hearty meals. The soups and porridge were delicious, but sometimes you just need a proper meal with meat and carbs to support recovery.

Aside from that, everything else was faultless. My husband also had dental work done, and the dentist was extremely attentive.

I was met at the airport by a lovely driver and there was another young lady with me as well.
We were dropped to the villa and given some soup which was nice.
Next day I had my surgery. Deep plane facelift, neck lift, temporal brow lift and upper eyes.
Everything went well and I spent the next 6 nights at the villa recovering.
It’s a lovely place to stay and you can even just pick oranges off the trees! They are super delicious.
I walked down to the sea one day as well. There are a couple of mini markets you can buy things from.
I 100% recommend this clinic to anyone looking to have surgery.
It takes all the stress out of it and they even found the flights for me!
One lady who was there with me had been there 6 times and when she told me her age I very nearly fell off my chair lol!

The service was outstanding.
On arriving the driver was waiting for me to take me to the villa.
The villa is just amazing, helpful friendly and experienced staff on call 24/7
The surgeon was friendly and informative
The hospital was spotless, I stayed for 1 night before going back to the villa to recover for a further 8 nights
The room at the villa had everything I needed and pull cords should help have been needed, thankfully it wasn’t.
The grounds and pool were perfect, unfortunately I could only look at the pool due to surgery.

Will I still need glasses?

Is lens replacement the same as LASIK?

No. LASIK reshapes the cornea and leaves the natural lens in place. Lens replacement removes that lens and inserts an IOL. They have different assessment requirements and risks.

Am I suitable if I cannot have laser eye surgery?

Not necessarily. The ophthalmologist must assess the reason laser treatment is unsuitable and the separate risks of lens surgery. Continuing with glasses or contact lenses may be preferable.

Is lens replacement painful?

Anaesthesia is used for the operation, but pressure during treatment and discomfort afterwards are possible. Ask about the anaesthetic plan and seek prompt clinical advice for severe or worsening pain.

Can both eyes be treated during one trip?

When can I fly home and return to work?
