- SMILE: removes a lenticule through a small incision; no LASIK-style flap is made.
- LASIK: creates a corneal flap, then uses an excimer laser to reshape the tissue underneath.
- PRK and other surface treatments: treat the corneal surface after removing the outer cell layer, which then heals.

ZEISS describes SMILE pro using VISUMAX 800, with treatment for long-sightedness available in selected markets as well as short-sightedness and astigmatism. Conventional SMILE and SMILE pro should not be assumed to cover identical prescriptions.
