Eye bag removal techniques we offer
The incision approach and the work done through it are separate decisions. The surgeon should explain the proposed approach, whether skin or fat will be adjusted, and whether the lower lid needs additional support.
Transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty
The incision is on the inside of the lower eyelid, giving access to the fat beneath it. This approach alone does not remove loose external skin; if skin treatment is needed, ask how it would be addressed and whether that changes the scar pattern.
External or transcutaneous lower blepharoplasty
An incision below the lower lashes allows the surgeon to address external skin as part of the operation. There is a skin scar, and its visibility changes with healing. The choice depends on your anatomy and the intended correction.
Fat repositioning, removal and fat transfer
Existing eyelid fat may be repositioned to address the transition towards a hollow area, or some may be removed. Fat transfer is a separate technique using fat taken from another part of the body; it is not another name for repositioning existing eyelid fat. Ask which, if any, is proposed in your plan.

First few days: swelling, bruising, irritation and temporary blurred vision can occur. Follow the treating team’s instructions for eye care, medicines and any prescribed drops or ointment. Ask what symptoms should prompt an urgent review.
Early review: agree when your wounds and eyelid position will be checked and whether stitches need removal. Flying home is a separate decision from leaving hospital: the surgeon must assess your recovery and confirm travel clearance.
Work and daily activities: NHS guidance suggests allowing around two weeks off work, depending on the job. Bruising can remain visible longer. Driving, contact lenses, swimming and exercise each need appropriate clearance; returning to desk work does not mean every activity is suitable.
Following months: swelling and scars continue to settle. Review the result at the stage recommended by your surgeon rather than judging it immediately after surgery. Individual healing and combined procedures can change this timetable.

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, delayed healing, dry eyes, visible scarring, asymmetry and changes in eyelid position. A lower lid can pull down or turn outwards (ectropion), and further treatment may be needed. Rare bleeding behind the eye can threaten sight.
Tell the surgeon about dry-eye symptoms, previous eye or eyelid surgery, medical conditions and all medicines you use. Ask how your own risks will be assessed and managed; do not stop prescribed medicines without medical instructions.
Urgent symptoms: worsening eye pain, deteriorating vision, increasing redness or excessive discharge need immediate medical assessment. Seek an eye emergency service or emergency department and notify your treating team. Do not wait for a routine remote follow-up.
