Effective Lazy Eye Treatment Options for Better Vision

Amblyopia (“lazy eye”) is reduced vision that develops when the brain and an eye do not work together normally during childhood. It may affect one or, less often, both eyes. Children may not notice it, so vision screening and a full eye examination are important.

Possible causes

Amblyopia may follow a difference in prescription between the eyes, a squint, or something that blocks clear vision such as a cataract or drooping eyelid. Treatment begins by identifying and addressing the cause.

Treatment options

An eye specialist may prescribe glasses or contact lenses. If vision remains reduced, supervised treatment may include covering the stronger eye with a patch or using atropine drops to blur it temporarily. Surgery may be needed for a cataract, drooping eyelid or squint, but squint surgery alone does not directly restore vision lost from amblyopia.

Duration and intensity must be prescribed and monitored for the individual child. Do not use someone else’s patching schedule or atropine. Treatment is generally more effective when started while vision is developing, but age alone should not be used online to declare treatment impossible.

Read the NHS lazy-eye guide and National Eye Institute overview. Revitalize can confirm whether a suitable contracted eye specialist and facility are available through the contact route.

General information only; children with suspected vision problems need an eye examination.
