Eye treatment in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

This page is an overview of the eye treatments we arrange in İzmir, written for patients travelling from South Africa. It explains what each treatment is for, who treats you, how long to stay and what to arrange at home. Each treatment has its own South African page, linked below.

In short: Eye treatments in Turkey fall into four groups: laser vision correction, lens replacement (including cataract surgery), dry eye treatment and glaucoma care. All are carried out by board-certified ophthalmologists in İzmir. Most patients can fly home one to three days after treatment if the ophthalmologist agrees. South Africans travel with an e-Visa via Istanbul. Your suitability and the right treatment are decided only after a full eye examination on arrival.

Which eye treatment fits which problem?

Eye treatment covers procedures that improve sight, treat common eye conditions or reduce the need for glasses and contact lenses. Broadly:

  • Laser vision correction — reshapes the cornea to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism
  • Lens replacement — replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), for age-related changes in vision or to rely less on glasses
  • Cataract surgery — replaces a lens that has become cloudy with a clear artificial one
  • Dry eye treatment — aims to improve the tear film when the eyes stay dry, gritty or irritated
  • Glaucoma treatment — lowers pressure inside the eye to protect the optic nerve

Not sure which applies to you? Send your current prescription and describe your symptoms. The ophthalmologist will say which treatment, if any, makes sense, and the full overview is on the eye treatment page.

Who treats you, and how it starts

Eye treatments are carried out only by board-certified ophthalmologists in İzmir; see clinic facts for who treats patients and where. Before you travel you share your prescription and symptoms for a provisional plan. On arrival you have eye tests, a consultation and a detailed examination, and only then are your suitability and the treatment confirmed.

Planning the trip from South Africa

  • Flights: around ten hours direct from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul, then a short hop to İzmir
  • Visa: South Africans apply online for an e-Visa before travelling
  • Time difference: İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa
  • Flying home: the ophthalmologist decides when you are fit to fly, so book a return ticket you can change
  • How long to stay: most patients fly home one to three days after treatment; ask before booking whether both eyes are treated on the same trip
  • Dry cabin air: a long flight dries the eyes, so keep any prescribed drops in your hand luggage and ask the ophthalmologist about the flight
  • Sun: the South African sun is strong; good sunglasses are sensible after any eye procedure

Records, follow-up and cover

  • Ask for a written record of what was done, with your measurements and, for lens surgery, the lens implanted
  • Book a check-up with an optometrist or ophthalmologist at home for after you return; for glaucoma this means ongoing care at home
  • Ask your medical scheme in writing what, if anything, it will pay towards eye treatment abroad
  • Check your travel insurance: standard policies usually exclude planned treatment abroad

For one year, our treatment guarantee covers complications and clinically necessary further treatment in İzmir at no charge for that treatment; flights and accommodation are your own cost. See also our complaints process.

What we will not do

We will not confirm a treatment before your eyes have been examined, we will not promise that you will never need glasses again, and we will not clear you to fly before the ophthalmologist is satisfied with your follow-up check. A long journey is not a reason to treat more than is safe in one trip.

Frequently asked questions

Which eye treatment is right for me?

That depends on your prescription, age and eye health. Laser treatment reshapes the cornea, lens replacement replaces the natural lens, and dry eye and glaucoma care treat specific conditions. The ophthalmologist confirms the right option only after a full eye examination on arrival.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for eye treatment?

Most patients can fly home one to three days after treatment, subject to the ophthalmologist’s approval at the follow-up check. Allow time for the eye tests and examination on arrival as well, and book a return ticket you can change.

Who carries out the treatment?

Board-certified ophthalmologists in İzmir. Who treats patients and where is set out on our clinic facts page.

Can I fly back to South Africa straight after eye treatment?

Not straight away. The ophthalmologist examines your eyes at follow-up and decides when you are fit to fly. Cabin air is dry, so keep any prescribed drops in your hand luggage.

Will my medical aid cover eye treatment in Turkey?

Do not assume it will. Ask your medical scheme in writing what it would pay for treatment abroad, and check your travel insurance, which usually excludes planned treatment abroad.
