How Long Does a Trifocal Lens Last? Limits and Follow-up

A trifocal intraocular lens is implanted during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange and is intended to provide more than one range of focus. The lens is designed to remain in the eye, but that does not guarantee lifelong spectacle independence or unchanged vision.

What affects long-term vision

Vision can change because of eye disease, corneal or retinal conditions, lens position, prescription error or clouding of the capsule behind the implant. The implant itself may rarely require repositioning, exchange or another procedure.

Suitability and trade-offs

An ophthalmologist should assess the cornea, retina, optic nerve, eye measurements, visual needs and expectations. Trifocal optics can cause glare, halos, reduced contrast or adaptation difficulty. A monofocal, toric, extended-depth or another lens may be more appropriate.

Follow-up

Recovery and stabilisation differ between patients. New pain, redness, flashes, floaters, a curtain in vision or sudden sight loss requires urgent assessment. Regular eye care remains necessary because an implant does not prevent other eye disease.
