Cellulite Treatment: Options, Evidence and Limitations

Cellulite is the dimpled appearance created by the relationship between skin, connective tissue and underlying fat. It is common and not an illness. No treatment can guarantee permanent removal or the same response for every person.

Assessment and options

A qualified practitioner should confirm the concern and review skin, health, medicines, pregnancy where relevant, scarring and expectations. Options may include no treatment, temporary appearance-focused measures, selected energy-based devices or procedures that release particular fibrous bands. A named device is not automatically suitable for every pattern of cellulite.

Evidence and limitations

Device studies may use different outcome measures, follow-up periods and patient groups. Claims of causal correction, novelty, permanence or superiority over every other method require applicable comparative evidence. Photographs can be affected by lighting, posture and skin compression.

Risks and recovery

Risks vary by method and can include pain, bruising, swelling, bleeding, infection, altered sensation, pigment change, contour irregularity, scarring and dissatisfaction. Recovery and duration of any visible change vary. The practitioner should explain device approval, training, alternatives and arrangements for complications.
