Multifocal vs Trifocal: Which is Better for You?

Multifocal and trifocal intraocular lenses are designed to provide focus at more than one distance. Neither type is automatically “better”; the choice depends on eye health, visual priorities and tolerance of optical side effects.

How the lenses differ

Multifocal is a broad term for lenses that distribute light across more than one focal range. Trifocal designs aim to provide near, intermediate and distance focus. Designs and performance vary by product, and labels do not guarantee freedom from glasses.

Assessment

An ophthalmic assessment should consider cataract or refractive need, cornea, retina, optic nerve, dry eye, astigmatism, pupil and previous surgery. Driving at night, screen use, reading distance and occupation are relevant. Some eye conditions make a premium lens unsuitable.

Benefits, limits and risks

Either design may reduce dependence on glasses, but some tasks may still require them. Glare, halos, reduced contrast, blur or difficulty adapting can occur. Standard surgical risks include infection, inflammation, retinal problems, lens-position problems and further treatment. Results cannot be predicted from a headline percentage.

• What vision should I expect at each distance?
• How might it affect contrast and night driving?
• What are the alternatives, including a monofocal lens?
• What happens if I do not adapt to the result?
