Vaginoplasty: Assessment, Options, Risks and Recovery
Vaginoplasty can refer to different reconstructive or elective operations involving the vaginal canal. It is not the same as labiaplasty, treatment for urinary incontinence or pelvic-organ prolapse, and it cannot guarantee sexual function, confidence or a particular appearance.
Assessment and alternatives
A consultation should clarify symptoms and goals and review childbirth or trauma, pelvic-floor symptoms, pain, sexual function, previous surgery, health, medicines, smoking and expectations. Pelvic-floor physiotherapy, gynaecological or urogynecological care, counselling, no treatment or another procedure may be appropriate.
Procedure and limits
The surgical plan depends on anatomy and indication. Vaginal tightening, labiaplasty and gender-affirming vaginoplasty are distinct procedures with different techniques, risks and specialist requirements. Commercial “rejuvenation” labels do not define a medical operation.
Risks and recovery
Risks may include bleeding, infection, wound separation, scarring, altered sensation, pain, painful intercourse, narrowing, urinary symptoms, pelvic-floor problems, anaesthetic complications, blood clots and further treatment. Recovery, sexual activity, work and travel timing require individual written instructions.
