Vaginitis: 7 Types, Symptoms, Causes & Fast Treatment (2026 Gynaecology Guide)
Vaginitis means soreness or inflammation in and around the vagina. Symptoms can include itching, soreness, unusual discharge, dryness, pain during urination or sex, spotting, or irritated skin. Different causes can produce similar symptoms, so self-diagnosis may lead to unsuitable treatment.
Possible causes
- Thrush or bacterial imbalance.
- Sexually transmitted infections.
- Hormonal changes related to menopause, breastfeeding or contraception.
- Skin conditions, irritation, injury or a retained object such as a tampon.
When to arrange an assessment
Seek clinical or sexual-health advice for first-time symptoms, unusual discharge, symptoms after sex with a new partner, pelvic pain, fever or chills, pregnancy, recurrent symptoms, or symptoms that are severe, different or not improving. Avoid sex until assessed if an STI may be possible.
Treatment depends on the cause
Antifungal medicine, antibiotics, moisturisers, lubricants, hormone treatment or treatment for a skin condition may be appropriate in different circumstances. Do not repeatedly use thrush treatment without confirming the cause. Avoid douching and scented products in or around the vagina.
