UroLift Procedure: Suitability, Alternatives and Risks
The UroLift procedure uses small implants to hold selected prostate tissue away from the urethra in some men with benign prostatic enlargement. It is not suitable for every prostate anatomy or every cause of urinary symptoms.
Assessment and alternatives
A urologist should assess symptoms, prostate size and shape, urine flow, bladder emptying, medicines, infection risk and other possible causes. Alternatives can include monitoring, medicines, another minimally invasive treatment or surgery.
Potential benefits and limitations
The procedure avoids cutting away prostate tissue, but symptom improvement varies. Some patients continue medicines or later need another procedure. The clinician should discuss how anatomy, obstruction and bladder function affect likely benefit.
Risks and urgent symptoms
Risks include pain or burning, bleeding, urgency, infection, difficulty passing urine, implant problems, persistent symptoms and retreatment. Inability to urinate, fever, severe pain or heavy bleeding requires urgent assessment.
