Penile Prosthesis: Options, Risks and Revitalize Care
A penile prosthesis is a surgically implanted device used to create rigidity for sexual activity. It is generally considered when erectile dysfunction is severe and other suitable treatments have not worked or cannot be used.
Device types and alternatives
Inflatable systems use implanted cylinders, a pump and a fluid reservoir. Malleable devices use bendable rods. The devices differ in operation, concealment, manual dexterity requirements and possible mechanical problems. Alternatives may include addressing underlying health factors, medicines, vacuum devices, injections or no surgery, depending on clinical suitability.
Assessment and consent
A specialist assessment should review the cause of erectile dysfunction, urinary and penile symptoms, previous pelvic or penile treatment, infection risk, diabetes control, medicines, manual dexterity, expectations and partner considerations where appropriate. The device supports rigidity; it does not by itself restore desire, sensation, ejaculation or fertility.
Risks and aftercare
Risks include bleeding, infection, pain, swelling, scarring, altered sensation, injury to nearby structures, device erosion or migration, mechanical failure, dissatisfaction and further surgery to remove, revise or replace the device. Recovery, activation and return to sexual activity must follow the operating urologist’s individual instructions.
