Health Check-Ups: Screening, Symptoms and Safe Testing

Health checks and screening should be based on age, symptoms, medical and family history, medicines and recognised national guidance. More testing is not automatically better; unnecessary tests can produce false alarms or incidental findings.

Routine review

A primary-care review may include blood pressure, weight or waist assessment, lifestyle discussion and selected blood tests. Vaccination, dental and eye-care needs and recognised screening programmes should be considered separately according to eligibility.

Symptoms need assessment

Screening is intended for people without relevant symptoms. New or concerning symptoms should not wait for a routine check-up. Seek timely clinical advice, and use urgent or emergency services when symptoms are severe.

Questions to ask

Ask why a test is recommended, what it can and cannot detect, possible harms, how results will be communicated and what follow-up would occur. Keep an accurate medicine list and share previous diagnoses, operations, allergies and relevant family history.

The NHS Health Check guide explains the programme and eligibility in England. For any travel-related care coordinated by Revitalize, use the assessment route and confirm the named contracted clinician and facility.
