Feminising Top Surgery with Implants: Planning and Risks
Feminising top surgery with implants can add chest volume and alter contour, but the plan should reflect the individual’s anatomy, identity, goals and tolerance for implants and scars. It is not one standard operation.
Assessment and consent
The surgeon should assess chest and breast anatomy, skin, asymmetry, health, medicines, smoking, previous treatment and expectations. Hormone use may affect tissue but is not assumed or required for every person. Alternatives include no surgery, fat transfer in selected cases or another plan.
Implant decisions
Discuss implant manufacturer, model, shape, size, surface, placement and incision, along with future imaging and revision. Implants are not lifetime devices and exact cup size, cleavage, symmetry or emotional benefit cannot be guaranteed.
Risks and recovery
Risks include bleeding, infection, scars, altered sensation, asymmetry, implant malposition or rupture, capsular contracture, blood clots, dissatisfaction and removal or replacement. Recovery varies and should not be based on an unnamed testimonial.
