COPD: Assessment, Management and Urgent Symptoms

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a long-term lung condition that can cause breathlessness, cough, sputum and flare-ups. Diagnosis and treatment require qualified respiratory care; cosmetic or anti-ageing services are not COPD treatment.

Assessment

A clinician may review symptoms, smoking and exposure history, medicines and other conditions and perform breathing tests. Chest imaging, oxygen measurement or other tests may be needed. Sudden severe breathlessness, blue lips, confusion or chest pain requires urgent emergency assessment.

Management options

Care can include stopping smoking, vaccination, inhaled medicines, pulmonary rehabilitation, physical activity and nutrition support, treatment of flare-ups and oxygen for selected patients. The plan depends on symptoms, test results and exacerbation history.

Limits and follow-up

COPD usually cannot be reversed, but appropriate treatment can reduce symptoms and risk. Complementary products should not replace evidence-based care and can interact with medicines. Inhaler technique, action plans and regular review are important.
