Calf Reduction: Assessment, Options and Risks

Calf size and shape may reflect muscle, fat, bone, swelling or a medical condition. “Calf reduction” is not one standard treatment, and assessment is required before considering a cosmetic procedure.

Assessment and possible causes

A clinician should assess whether fullness is symmetrical, stable and related to muscle or fat. New swelling, pain, redness, weakness, one-sided change or vascular symptoms require medical evaluation rather than cosmetic treatment.

Possible options

Depending on the cause, options may include no procedure, clothing or activity choices, treatment of a medical condition, a locally approved injectable treatment for selected muscle prominence, liposuction for suitable fat deposits or surgery in uncommon circumstances. These options are not interchangeable.

Risks and expectations

Risks vary and may include pain, bruising, weakness, walking change, asymmetry, contour irregularity, nerve or vessel injury, bleeding, infection, scarring, blood clots and dissatisfaction. Leg shape, measurement and duration of change vary between patients.

Revitalize care checks

Confirm the diagnosis, named contracted clinician and facility, exact treatment, local approval, alternatives, written quotation, follow-up and complication plan. See Revitalize’s body procedures, Mandarin Grove recovery information and assessment route.
