Brachioplasty: Assessment, Scars and Surgical Risks

Brachioplasty (arm lift) removes selected upper-arm skin and may include limited fat reduction. It leaves a scar and cannot guarantee toned, youthful or symmetrical arms.

Assessment and alternatives

The surgeon should assess skin excess, fat distribution, scars, lymphatic history, health, medicines, smoking, weight stability and expectations. Alternatives may include no surgery, lifestyle care, liposuction in selected cases or another contouring plan.

Procedure planning

Incision length and position depend on the amount and location of tissue. The surgeon should explain whether liposuction is proposed, where scars may lie and how existing asymmetry or skin quality may limit the result.

Risks and recovery

Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, delayed healing, wide or raised scars, asymmetry, altered sensation, lymphatic swelling, contour irregularity, blood clots, dissatisfaction and revision. Compression, activity and travel timing must be individualised.
