A bullhorn lift, also called a subnasal lip lift, removes a selected strip of skin beneath the nose to shorten the visible philtrum and alter upper-lip position. It is surgery and creates a permanent incision scar; suitability and likely change require individual assessment.

What the procedure may change

The operation may increase upper-lip show or change the relationship between the nose, philtrum and lip. It is not the same as dermal filler, which adds volume, and neither treatment is automatically better. Anatomy, dental show, lip movement and the patient’s goals matter.

Risks

Risks can include bleeding, infection, delayed healing, visible or raised scarring, asymmetry, altered sensation, nostril distortion, tightness, difficulty closing the lips, smile change, dissatisfaction and revision. Local anaesthesia has different considerations from general anaesthesia but does not eliminate risk.

Recovery and wound care

Swelling, bruising, tightness and temporary changes in sensation may occur. Suture care, cleansing, activity and sun protection should follow the treating team’s instructions. Fixed online schedules for work, suture removal or scar maturation cannot predict individual healing.
