Liv Hewson and Top Surgery: What Is Public, and What It Cannot Tell You

Liv Hewson has spoken publicly about having top surgery, in an interview with Teen Vogue, describing it as something they had considered for years and had been glad to do. That is theirs to share, and it is the only part that is public. The clinical details are not, and we do not speculate about anyone’s medical care.

If you are reading this because you are thinking about top surgery yourself, one person’s account — however honest — cannot tell you what is right for you.

Why someone else’s experience is not a guide to yours

Chest surgery is planned around your anatomy: chest size and shape, skin quality and elasticity, nipple and areola position, whether you have taken testosterone, your general health and what you want the result to be. Two people with the same goal are often offered different techniques, and the same technique gives different scars and different sensation in different people.

Interviews also compress time. Feeling settled a year later, or returning to work after a few weeks, describes that person’s course, not a timetable you can expect.

What top surgery involves

Masculinising chest surgery removes breast tissue and reshapes the chest — commonly double incision with free nipple grafts, or periareolar or keyhole techniques where the chest is smaller and skin elasticity allows. Feminising top surgery uses implants or fat transfer. Which is appropriate, or whether surgery is appropriate at all, is decided at assessment.

See our top surgery page for the procedures and risks, what top surgery involves for assessment and recovery, and top surgery scars for how healing progresses.

Questions worth asking

  • Which technique is proposed for you, and why that one?
  • Where will the scars sit, and what will they look like at six and twelve months?
  • What happens to nipple sensation, and how predictable is that?
  • Who is the operating surgeon, what is their registration, and which hospital is used?
  • What is the policy if revision is needed, and who pays for it?
  • What follow-up is arranged after you return home?

Treatment with Revitalize in Turkey

Treatment arranged through Revitalize takes place in Izmir. The surgeon and the hospital are contracted providers named in your written treatment plan, so their registration and experience can be checked before you travel. See our contracted surgeons and specialists and contracted hospitals pages, the treatment process page for the stages, and the treatment guarantee page for the limited written warranty that applies.
