Gender-confirmation or gender-affirming surgery describes a range of different procedures. The appropriate care pathway depends on individual goals, health, assessment and the exact operation. This guide does not imply that every procedure or UK provider mentioned elsewhere is available through Revitalize.

Different procedures require different specialists

Gender-affirming care may include chest surgery, genital surgery, facial procedures, voice-related care or non-surgical support. These options differ substantially in anatomy, function, risks, possible stages and long-term follow-up. A general label should never replace a procedure-specific consultation.

UK and NHS pathway information

NHS referral routes, eligibility criteria, commissioned services and waiting times can change and vary. Check current information directly with the relevant NHS service or official NHS website. Do not rely on an old article, price table or clinic claim as proof that a procedure is funded or available.

Private insurance decisions also depend on the individual policy and insurer. A clinic cannot guarantee coverage or reimbursement.

Verify qualifications and facilities

For UK care, professional registration can be checked with the General Medical Council where applicable. Membership of organisations such as BAPRAS, BAAPS or BAUS may provide additional information but is not a substitute for confirming specialist training, procedure-specific experience, hospital privileges and current regulatory status.

For Revitalize care, use the current specialist profiles and obtain direct written confirmation of the hospital. A clinic or hospital from a UK directory is not a Revitalize provider.

Assessment and informed consent

Assessment may cover goals, physical and mental health, medicines, hormone use, fertility wishes, smoking or nicotine, previous procedures, social support and practical recovery needs. Requirements should be confirmed with the treating service rather than inferred from a generic checklist.

The clinician should explain alternatives including no surgery, scars, sensation and function changes, fertility or sexual-health considerations, possible staged procedures, revision, recovery and long-term follow-up. Surgery cannot guarantee emotional wellbeing, social outcomes or a particular appearance.

Risks and continuity of care

Risks depend on the operation and may include bleeding, infection, wound problems, scarring, altered sensation, tissue loss, urinary or sexual-function changes, blood clots, anaesthetic complications, dissatisfaction and revision. Complex procedures may require several stages and specialist follow-up.

Before travel, confirm hospital stay, wound and catheter care where relevant, medicines, mobility, fitness to fly, emergency contacts and follow-up after returning home. When included, Mandarin Grove supports non-hospital recovery but does not replace specialist, hospital or emergency care.

Costs and patient accounts

Historic private prices and generic NHS funding tables are unreliable. Request an itemised quotation naming the procedure, surgeon, hospital, anaesthesia, tests, stay, medicines, follow-up, exclusions and complication arrangements. Anonymous quotations or unrelated videos do not verify a typical result or provider quality.
