Nipple correction in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

Nipple correction is surgery to change nipples that are inverted, enlarged, elongated, overly prominent or uneven. It is a small operation, and it is most often done at the same time as another breast procedure. This page explains what can be corrected, who it suits, and how South African patients should weigh up the trip.

In short: Nipple correction treats inverted, enlarged, elongated, prominent or uneven nipples. It is usually added to a breast augmentation, lift or reduction rather than done alone. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. South Africans travel with an e-Visa via Istanbul to İzmir, and Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa.

What it corrects

  • Inverted nipples — nipples that turn inwards rather than outwards
  • Enlarged or elongated nipples — often after pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Overly prominent nipples — nipples that project more than you would like
  • Uneven nipples — differences in size or position between the two sides

The surgeon chooses the technique to suit your concern and anatomy. Details are on the nipple correction page.

Usually done with another breast operation

Nipple correction is most often added to a breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction, so that one trip and one recovery cover both. It can be done on its own in suitable cases, but for a small procedure the trip from South Africa is long, so ask the surgeon honestly whether it is worth travelling for alone. All options are in our breast surgery guide for South African patients.

Who it suits

  • People bothered by the shape, size, projection or symmetry of their nipples
  • People whose nipples changed after pregnancy, breastfeeding, ageing or weight change
  • People already planning another breast operation
  • Non-smokers, or people able to stop before surgery, in good general health

If you hope to breastfeed in future, say so at the start, because some techniques for inverted nipples can affect milk ducts. The surgeon will explain what applies to you.

How long to stay, and the flight home

You meet the surgeon face to face and have health checks and blood tests before surgery. Afterwards you recover at Mandarin Grove, our recovery retreat near İzmir, where nurses check your dressings. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval; if the correction is part of a larger operation, the stay for that operation applies.

  • Avoid pressure and friction on the nipples; wear loose, soft clothing on the flight
  • Walk regularly on the ten-hour flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town and drink water
  • Take home a written summary of what was done for your GP

Recovery at home

Swelling settles over the first weeks, and you can gradually return to normal activity. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and pressure on the chest until the surgeon clears you. Scars soften over three to six months, and results usually last unless pregnancy, breastfeeding or a large weight change alters the breasts.

Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call, and Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within a year are covered by our treatment guarantee; it does not cover a preference for a different look where the result is within what was discussed with you, and flights and accommodation for any revision remain your own cost. Facts about the clinic and surgeons are on the clinic facts page, and if something goes wrong you can use our complaints process.

What we will not do

We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise a particular result, and we will not encourage a long trip for a small procedure if it is not in your interest.

Frequently asked questions

Can nipple correction be done on its own?

Yes, in suitable cases, but it is most often done at the same time as a breast augmentation, lift or reduction. The surgeon will advise whether travelling for nipple correction alone makes sense for you.

Can inverted nipples come back after correction?

Partial return of inversion is one of the known risks after inverted nipple correction. The surgeon will explain your individual risk at the consultation.

Will I lose sensation in my nipples?

Changes in nipple sensation, including temporary numbness, are possible. Surgeons aim to preserve nipple function wherever possible, and the surgeon will discuss this with you before surgery.

How long after nipple correction can I fly home to South Africa?

Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval. If the correction is part of a larger breast operation, the advice for that operation applies.

Will my medical aid cover nipple correction?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic breast surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery. Ask both specifically before you book.
