For patients in South Africa
Breast reduction in Turkey from South Africa
A breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) takes away excess breast tissue, fat and skin so the breasts become smaller, lighter and better proportioned to your frame. This page covers who it suits, recovery and planning the trip from South Africa.
In short: Breast reduction removes tissue that diet and exercise cannot shift, reshapes the breast and moves the nipple higher. The operation usually takes around two to three hours, and most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. From South Africa you need an e-Visa and a ten-hour flight to Istanbul, so allow for the surgeon to ask you to stay a little longer.

Who it may suit
- your breasts feel too large for your build
- their weight causes back, neck or shoulder pain, or bra straps leave grooves in your shoulders
- you get skin irritation under the breasts
- breast size stops you exercising comfortably or affects your confidence
- you are close to your ideal weight and can keep it stable, you are in good general health, and you do not smoke or can stop before surgery
A surgeon confirms suitability from your medical history, photographs and goals. If a reduction is not the right answer, you will be told, and a breast lift or a breast lift with implants may be suggested instead.
Techniques
The technique depends on your anatomy:
- Standard breast reduction — excess tissue and skin are removed, usually through an anchor-shaped incision
- Free-nipple breast reduction — the nipple is removed and replaced as a skin graft, which allows more skin and tissue to be removed
Scars cannot be avoided; they soften and fade over the following months.
Your time in İzmir
On arrival you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with the surgeon. Board-certified plastic surgeons operate, usually for two to three hours. You then recover at Mandarin Grove, the recovery retreat near İzmir, with nursing support, dressing changes and planned checks.
- Days 1–3: rest with your upper body raised; swelling, bruising and some discomfort are expected, and you wear a surgical bra day and night
- Days 4–7: any drains usually come out and light daily activity becomes easier; most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days
- Weeks 2–6: normal routines return gradually; heavy lifting and upper-body exercise wait until the surgeon says so
- Months 3–6: the shape settles, scars fade and remaining swelling goes; results last if your weight stays stable
Risks
Breast reduction is a well-established operation, but it carries risks: swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection (seroma), slow wound healing and changes in nipple or breast sensation. Less commonly there can be bleeding, infection, blood clots, asymmetry, difficulty breastfeeding or partial loss of the nipple’s blood supply. The surgeon goes through your own risks before you agree.
Planning the trip from South Africa
Direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir. South African passport holders need an e-Visa before travelling; the e-Visa guide explains how to apply.
- Book a changeable return ticket; the surgeon decides when you can fly
- Wear your surgical bra on the flight and let others lift your luggage
- Choose an aisle seat, walk regularly and drink water
Some South African medical schemes assess a medically indicated reduction differently from cosmetic surgery, but rarely pay for treatment abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes it. Ask in writing; we cannot promise cover. Pricing is transparent and given in writing after review; the cost depends mainly on the technique, anything combined and the length of stay.
Follow-up at home
Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call; İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa. Take your operation notes home so any doctor who sees you later knows what was done. Under our treatment guarantee, complications and clinically necessary revisions within one year are treated in İzmir at no charge for that treatment; flights and accommodation are your own cost. What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, promise a cup size or a scar-free result, or operate if your health makes it unsafe.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to stay in Turkey for a breast reduction?
Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. Because the flight home to South Africa takes around ten hours, the surgeon may ask you to stay a little longer, so book a flexible return ticket.
Will my medical aid pay for a breast reduction in Turkey?
We cannot promise this. Some medical schemes assess a medically indicated reduction differently from cosmetic surgery, but schemes rarely cover treatment abroad. Ask your scheme in writing before you book.
Will I have scars?
Yes. Scars cannot be avoided, and the pattern depends on the technique, often an anchor shape. They soften and fade over the following months.
Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Some women can and some cannot. Difficulty breastfeeding is one of the risks the surgeon discusses with you before surgery.
Where do I recover after surgery?
You recover at Mandarin Grove, the recovery retreat near İzmir, with nursing support and planned checks until the surgeon clears you to fly.
