Breast lift in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

A breast lift (mastopexy) removes loose, stretched skin and repositions the breast tissue and nipple higher on the chest, and it can be combined with implants if volume has been lost too. For South African patients the operation is the same as for anyone else; what needs extra planning is the length of stay and the ten-hour flight home. This page covers both, and the questions to ask before you book.

In short: South Africans can have a breast lift in Turkey with an e-Visa and a direct flight to Istanbul, then a short connection to İzmir. Whether you need a lift alone or a lift with implants, and which incision, is decided by the surgeon from your photographs and goals. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home to South Africa takes around ten hours, plan for the surgeon to ask you to stay longer.

Lift alone, or lift with implants?

A breast lift changes the position and shape of the breast; it does not add much volume. If you have also lost fullness, particularly in the upper breast, the surgeon may suggest a lift with implants (augmentation mastopexy) in the same operation.

The incision depends on how much lifting is needed:

  • Crescent lift — for minimal looseness
  • Areolar lift — a single circular incision around the areola
  • Anchor lift — the most extensive incision, allowing the greatest lift

A breast lift takes around two hours; with implants, around two to three. All techniques are explained on the breast uplift treatment page. If you mainly want more volume rather than a lift, read about breast augmentation for South African patients.

Who it suits

  • People whose breasts have sagged after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or ageing, or whose nipples sit low or point downwards
  • People at a stable weight close to their target
  • Non-smokers, or people able to stop before surgery
  • People in good general health with realistic expectations about scars and recovery

Candidacy is confirmed only after a medical review of your history, photographs and goals. Later pregnancy or weight change can affect the result.

How long to stay, and the flight home

You fly with an e-Visa on a direct Turkish Airlines flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul (around ten hours), then a short domestic flight to İzmir. After surgery you recover at Mandarin Grove near İzmir; any drains are usually removed within the first week. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but a ten-hour flight soon after surgery raises the risk of blood clots, so the surgeon may ask South African patients to stay longer. Book a return ticket you can change.

  • Wear your surgical bra, and any stockings you are given, on the flight
  • Do not lift your own luggage; ask for help or pack light
  • Choose an aisle seat, stand and walk regularly, and drink water
  • Tell us at the start about any history of clots, smoking or hormone medication

Recovery at home

Keep wearing the surgical bra as advised. Swelling settles over the following weeks and you can gradually return to normal activities, but heavy lifting, upper-body workouts and strenuous exercise wait until the surgeon clears you. The breasts settle into their final shape over three to six months, and the scars fade gradually after that. With a stable weight the result is long-lasting, though ageing continues; implants are not lifetime devices and may need replacing in future.

Risks include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection and delayed healing, and more rarely bleeding, infection or blood clots. Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within a year are covered by our treatment guarantee. Keep your GP informed, and ask us before you book how follow-up would work in your city.

What decides the cost

The cost depends on the technique, whether implants are added and how long you stay. Ask for a written breakdown of what is included. See our clinic facts, safety, complaints and patient videos pages.

What we will not do

We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise a result or scarless surgery, and we will not operate if your health makes it unsafe. A long journey is not a reason to add more procedures to one operation than the surgeon judges safe.

Frequently asked questions

How long after a breast lift can I fly home to South Africa?

The surgeon decides. Most breast lift patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home takes around ten hours, South African patients may be asked to stay longer.

Do I need a breast lift or a breast lift with implants?

A breast lift raises and reshapes the breast but adds little volume. If you have also lost fullness, particularly in the upper breast, the surgeon may suggest combining the lift with implants, decided from your photographs and goals.

Will a breast lift leave scars?

Yes. Where the scars sit depends on the technique, from a single scar around the areola to the longer anchor pattern. They fade gradually over the following months but do not disappear.

Can I get pregnant after a breast lift?

It is possible, but pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight change can stretch the breasts again and affect the result. If you plan more children, say so at the start.

Will my medical aid cover a breast lift?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover a cosmetic breast lift, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery abroad. Ask both specifically.
