For patients in South Africa
Breast augmentation in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide
Breast augmentation uses silicone implants to increase the size and fullness of the breasts, restore volume lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, or improve symmetry. For South African patients the operation is the same as for anyone else; what needs extra planning is the long flight home and how your implants will be looked after once you are back. This page covers both, and the questions to ask before you book.
In short: South Africans can have breast implants in Turkey with an e-Visa and a direct flight to Istanbul, then a short connection to İzmir. The operation typically takes around two hours, and the implant size and placement are agreed with the surgeon from your photographs and goals. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home to South Africa takes around ten hours, plan for the surgeon to ask you to stay longer.

Under or over the muscle?
Two placements are offered, and the right one depends on your anatomy and the result you want:
- Under the muscle — the implant sits beneath the chest muscle, which gives it extra padding
- Over the muscle — the implant sits above the muscle, for more definition and volume
If implants alone are not the right option, the surgeon may suggest combining them with a breast lift. Both placements are explained on the breast implants treatment page.
Who it suits
- People who would like fuller breasts, or have lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or with age
- People who want to improve breast symmetry or overall proportions
- People close to their ideal weight and able to keep it stable
- Non-smokers, or people able to stop before surgery
- People with realistic expectations about the result and the recovery
Candidacy is confirmed only after a medical review of your history, photographs and goals.
Before you book: ask for the details in writing
You will be living with these implants long after the trip. Ask us to confirm in writing:
- The implant brand and type
- The size and the placement (under or over the muscle)
- Your implant card and operation records to take home
Keep these records safe and show them to any doctor who examines you at home. Our clinic facts page sets out who carries out the surgery and where.
How long to stay, and the flight home
After surgery patients recover at Mandarin Grove near İzmir, with nursing checks and dressing changes. Drains, if used, are usually removed within the first week, and most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. A ten-hour flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town soon after surgery raises the risk of blood clots, so the surgeon may ask South African patients to stay longer. Book a return ticket you can change.
- Wear your surgical bra on the flight; you will wear it for several weeks
- Do not lift your own luggage; ask for help at both airports
- Choose an aisle seat, stand and walk regularly, and drink water
- Tell us at the start about any history of clots, smoking or hormone medication
Recovery at home
Swelling improves over the following weeks as the implants begin to settle. Heavy lifting, upper body workouts and strenuous exercise are off limits for around four to six weeks, until the surgeon clears you. The implants settle into their final position over three to six months, and the breasts soften into a more natural shape. Risks include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection and, more rarely, infection, blood clots, capsular contracture, rupture or displacement of the implant.
Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within a year are covered by our treatment guarantee. Implants do not need routine replacement, but regular check-ups are recommended, so arrange long-term monitoring with a doctor at home. Keep your GP informed, and ask us before you book how follow-up would work in your city.
What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise a result, and we will not fit an implant larger than the surgeon judges safe for your body. A long journey is not a reason to add more procedures to one operation than the surgeon judges safe. If something goes wrong, our complaints process explains how to raise it and you can read whether Revitalize in Turkey is safe or watch patient videos.
Frequently asked questions
How long after breast augmentation can I fly home to South Africa?
The surgeon decides. Most breast implant patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home takes around ten hours, South African patients may be asked to stay longer.
Will the implants go under or over the muscle?
Both placements are offered. Under the muscle, the chest muscle gives the implant extra padding; over the muscle gives more definition and volume. The surgeon recommends one based on your anatomy and goals.
Will I have visible scars?
Some scarring is unavoidable. The incision is placed in a discreet spot, such as the breast crease, where the scar is usually well hidden and fades significantly over time.
Do breast implants need replacing?
Implants have no fixed expiry date and do not need routine replacement unless a complication develops or you want a different size or shape. Regular check-ups are recommended, so arrange monitoring with a doctor at home.
Will my medical aid cover breast augmentation?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic breast augmentation, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery abroad. Ask both specifically.
