General dentistry in Turkey from South Africa: when it makes sense

General dentistry covers the everyday work of keeping teeth healthy: cleaning, fillings, extractions, root canal treatment and gum care. This page explains what we arrange in İzmir, when it is worth having it done in Turkey rather than at home, and how to plan the trip from South Africa.

In short: General dentistry in Turkey is most useful as the first stage of a larger plan, such as veneers or implants, so that work starts on a healthy mouth. Routine check-ups are best done by a dentist near home. South Africans travel with an e-Visa and a direct flight to Istanbul, then a short connection to İzmir.

What general dentistry covers

General dentistry is about keeping your own teeth healthy: preventing problems, finding them early and repairing damage before it needs bigger treatment. It is also the groundwork for cosmetic work, because veneers, crowns or implants should not be placed on teeth or gums that still have decay or disease.

Each link below goes to a guide written for South African patients. The general page is general dentistry in Turkey.

Dentures are also part of restorative dentistry; see dentures in Turkey.

Who travels for general dentistry

Few people fly to Turkey just for a filling. More often, general dentistry is part of a larger plan: a cleaning and gum check before veneers, a root canal on a tooth that will later be crowned, or an extraction before an implant. In those cases it makes sense to have it done by the same team, at the start of the same trip, so the larger treatment starts on a healthy mouth.

If you only need routine care, your dentist in South Africa is usually the better choice, because regular check-ups need someone close to home.

How the visit works

The plan is tailored to what the dentist finds. You send recent X-rays or photographs, the dentist reviews them, and you receive a written plan. In İzmir the dentist examines you, takes any further imaging needed, and confirms the plan before treatment starts. Most general treatments are done under local anaesthetic. A root canal may need more than one appointment, and the plan should say how many visits are needed and how long to stay.

Planning the trip from South Africa

  • Flights: direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, then a short domestic flight to İzmir
  • Visa: South Africans need an e-Visa before travelling; see the e-Visa guide
  • Time difference: İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa
  • Records: bring recent X-rays if you have them, and take home a written record of every treatment and material
  • Cover: medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, so check with yours; standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad

Aftercare at home

Keep your dentist in South Africa informed, and book a check-up for after you return. Cleaning and check-ups at home protect whatever was done in Turkey. What our treatment guarantee covers for dental work is set out on that page; it excludes problems caused by smoking, poor oral hygiene or treatment by another provider after you return. The dentists are listed on clinic facts, and our complaints page explains how problems are handled.

What we will not do

We will not extract a tooth that can reasonably be saved, we will not start cosmetic work on teeth or gums that need treating first, and we will not begin without a plan you have seen and agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth travelling to Turkey for general dentistry alone?

Usually not for routine care, which is best done by a dentist near home. It makes most sense when fillings, cleaning, gum care or a root canal are needed before larger treatment on the same trip.

Why do I need fillings or gum treatment before veneers or implants?

Cosmetic and implant work should start on a healthy mouth. Decay or gum disease left untreated can undermine the new work, so the dentist treats those first.

How long does a root canal take?

It depends on the tooth and how inflamed it is. Some are finished in one appointment, others need more than one. Your written plan should say how many visits are needed.

Is general dental treatment painful?

Most treatments are carried out under local anaesthetic. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles; tell the treating team if it does not.

Will my medical aid cover dental treatment in Turkey?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad. Ask your scheme before you book.
