Teeth Cleaning in Turkey from South Africa: when it fits into your trip

Professional teeth cleaning removes plaque, tartar and surface stains, which helps keep teeth and gums healthy and lowers the risk of gum disease and decay. Hardened tartar cannot be removed by brushing and flossing at home, which is why a professional clean matters. Cleaning is something most people need regularly, so for South African patients it is usually best done by a dentist or hygienist at home, with a clean in Turkey making sense as part of a trip for other treatment.

In short: A professional clean is usually done in a single appointment of around 30 to 60 minutes. Most patients find it comfortable; if your teeth are sensitive or your gums are inflamed you may feel mild discomfort, and some sensitivity can last a day or two. Most dentists recommend a clean every six months, so keep it up with a dentist in South Africa.

What a professional clean does

A dentist or hygienist removes plaque and tartar from around and between the teeth, including areas that are hard to reach at home, and polishes away surface stains. It also freshens the breath. The result is a cleaner surface that is easier to keep healthy with brushing and flossing.

Cleaning is preventive. If the gums are already bleeding, swollen or receding, a standard clean may not be enough, and the dentist may recommend gum treatment instead.

When it makes sense in Turkey

A clean on its own is not a reason to fly from South Africa. It fits naturally into a trip when:

  • You are travelling for other dental treatment and want your teeth and gums assessed and cleaned at the same time
  • Your dentist in İzmir wants the gums healthy before other work begins
  • You have not had a check-up for a long time and want a full assessment while you are there

Our dentists and hygienists are listed on clinic facts, and the treatment is described on the teeth cleaning page.

Travel and timing

Flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town take around ten hours to Istanbul direct, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir, where treatment takes place. İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa, so jet lag is not a factor, and South Africans need an e-Visa before travelling. A clean needs no recovery time, so it can be scheduled on any day of your stay. If you are also having other treatment, ask for the clean to be booked early, before the main work.

South African medical schemes generally do not cover planned dental treatment abroad, so check with yours before you book; we cannot promise any refund. Standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad too.

Keeping it up at home

Most dentists recommend a professional clean every six months, and more often for people with gum disease or other oral health concerns. That means the long-term work happens at home:

  • Find a dentist or hygienist in South Africa for regular cleans and check-ups
  • Take home any X-rays and notes from your assessment in Turkey
  • Brush twice a day and clean between the teeth daily

What our treatment guarantee covers, and what it excludes, is set out on that page, and complaints are handled as described on our complaints page. For check-ups and fillings, see general dentistry in Turkey.

What we will not do

We will not suggest you fly to Turkey just for a clean, we will not add treatment to your plan that your assessment does not support, and we will not start other dental work while gum problems are left untreated.
