Root Canal Treatment in Turkey from South Africa: saving the tooth and planning the crown
Root canal treatment removes infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the root canals, and keeps the natural tooth in place. It relieves the pain the infection causes and, in many cases, avoids an extraction. For South African patients, the questions that matter are how many appointments it takes, whether the tooth will need a crown afterwards, and how to make sure your dentist at home can look after it.
In short: Most patients complete root canal treatment in three to five days in Turkey, allowing time for assessment, treatment and any follow-up. It is done under local anaesthetic and is generally no more uncomfortable than a filling; mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal. Ask early whether the tooth will need a crown, because that affects how long you stay.

When a root canal is needed
Root canal treatment may be recommended when the soft tissue inside the tooth, the pulp, is infected or damaged. Typical causes are:
- Deep decay
- Severe damage to the tooth
- Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
- Infection affecting the pulp
Left untreated, the infection can spread and cause more pain, an abscess and bone loss, and the tooth may eventually have to come out. The treatment is described on the root canal treatment page, and our dentists are listed on clinic facts.
Appointments and how long to stay
Most root canal treatments are completed in one or two appointments, depending on how complex the tooth is and how severe the infection. Allow three to five days in İzmir so there is time for assessment, treatment and any follow-up before you fly.
Flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town take around ten hours to Istanbul direct, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir, where treatment takes place. İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa, so jet lag is not a factor, and South Africans need an e-Visa before travelling. Because this is dental treatment rather than surgery, the long flight home is not a particular medical concern, but avoid squeezing the last appointment into your departure day.
Will I need a crown?
Often, yes. A crown is commonly recommended after root canal treatment, particularly on back teeth, to strengthen the tooth and protect it from fracture. If a crown is planned, ask:
- Whether the crown will be made and fitted on this trip, and how many extra days that adds
- Which material will be used
- Whether a temporary restoration will be placed if the crown is fitted later
More on crowns for South African patients is on dental crowns in Turkey. With a well-sealed restoration, good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, a root-treated tooth can last many years, often for life.
Aftercare in South Africa
- Ask for your X-rays and a written record of which tooth was treated and how it was restored
- Tell your dentist at home before you travel and book a check-up for after you return
- Contact us if pain returns or the area swells
Under our treatment guarantee, crowns and restorations are guaranteed for one year from the date they are fitted. Problems caused by poor oral hygiene, not following aftercare instructions, or treatment by another provider after you return are not covered. How complaints are handled is set out on our complaints page. South African medical schemes generally do not cover planned dental treatment abroad, so check with yours before you book; we cannot promise any refund. Standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad too. For routine check-ups and fillings, see general dentistry in Turkey.
What we will not do
We will not recommend extracting a tooth that root canal treatment can reasonably save without explaining both options, we will not fit a crown you have not agreed to, and we will not start treatment before you have seen the plan.
