Tooth Filling in Turkey from South Africa: what to expect and when it makes sense

A tooth filling repairs a tooth damaged by decay, a small fracture or wear. The damaged part is removed and replaced with a durable material that restores the tooth’s shape, strength and function, while keeping as much natural tooth as possible. A filling on its own is rarely a reason to fly from South Africa to Turkey. It makes most sense when it is part of a wider plan, such as a trip for crowns, implants or veneers, or when you are already in İzmir for other treatment.

In short: Most fillings take a single appointment of around 30 to 60 minutes, under local anaesthetic, and most patients finish filling treatment within one to two days depending on how many teeth need work. Mild sensitivity for a few days is common and usually settles quickly. Ask for your X-rays and a record of which teeth were filled to take home.

What a filling can and cannot do

A filling is recommended when damage is limited: a cavity, a chipped tooth or a worn area that can be repaired without a crown. When a tooth has lost too much structure, or the decay has reached the nerve, a filling may not be enough and a crown or root canal treatment may be needed instead. Treating decay promptly stops the cavity getting deeper and reduces the chance of needing more complex work later.

What happens at the appointment

Each filling is planned with digital diagnostics. The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so most patients feel little or no discomfort. The decayed or damaged part is removed and the filling material is placed and shaped to fit your bite. Most fillings take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and position of the cavity.

Your dentist will tell you when you can eat, which depends on the filling material; it is generally best to wait until the numbness has worn off. Our dentists are listed on clinic facts, and the treatment is described on the tooth filling page.

Planning the trip from South Africa

Flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town take around ten hours to Istanbul direct, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir, where treatment takes place. İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa, so jet lag is not a factor, and South Africans need an e-Visa before travelling. Filling treatment usually takes one to two days, depending on the number of teeth, so fillings are normally scheduled alongside other treatment rather than as a trip of their own. If you have several cavities, a dental assessment will show whether fillings are enough or whether some teeth need more.

South African medical schemes generally do not cover planned dental treatment abroad, so check with yours before you book; we cannot promise any refund. Standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad too.

Looking after fillings at home

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, fillings can last for many years; how long depends on the material and how much wear they take. To make follow-up easy:

  • Ask for a written record of which teeth were filled and with what material
  • Take your X-rays home for your dentist in South Africa
  • Keep up regular check-ups at home so new decay is caught early

What our treatment guarantee covers for restorations is set out on that page, including what it excludes, such as problems caused by poor oral hygiene. Complaints are handled as described on our complaints page. For check-ups and cleaning alongside fillings, see general dentistry in Turkey.

What we will not do

We will not recommend crowns where a filling would do, we will not fill teeth that do not need it, and we will not start before you have seen and agreed the treatment plan.
