Neck lift in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

A neck lift tightens loose skin and the muscle underneath it to give a smoother neck and a clearer jawline. For South African patients the operation is the same as for anyone else; the extra planning is around how long to stay in İzmir and the long flight home. This page covers who a neck lift suits, what happens in Turkey and what recovery looks like.

In short: A neck lift takes around two to four hours. Most patients are cleared to fly five to seven days after surgery, subject to the surgeon’s approval, and most return to work within one to two weeks. South Africans travel with an e-Visa and a direct flight to Istanbul, then a short connection to İzmir. The final result shows over three to six months.

What a neck lift does

The surgeon removes excess skin, tightens and repositions the muscle at the front of the neck, and removes fat under the chin where needed. It treats what injections and skin-tightening cannot: loose skin, neck bands and a jawline softened by age or weight change.

If fat is the main problem and your skin is still firm, neck liposuction may be enough. If the jowls have dropped too, the surgeon may suggest combining a neck lift with a facelift. The full technique is described on the neck lift treatment page.

Who it suits

  • People with loose or sagging skin around the neck and jawline
  • People with visible neck bands, fat beneath the chin or poor jawline definition
  • People in good general health with realistic expectations
  • Non-smokers, or people able to stop before surgery

Suitability is confirmed only after a medical assessment of your health, anatomy, photographs and goals. If a neck lift is not the right option, the surgeon will say so and explain what would suit you better.

What happens in Turkey

On arrival in İzmir you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with the surgeon. The operation usually takes two to four hours. Afterwards there are dressing changes, nursing support and check-ups, and patients recover at Mandarin Grove between appointments.

How long to stay, and the flight home

For the first three days you rest with your head raised, and swelling, bruising and a tight feeling around the neck are expected; you may be asked to wear a compression garment. From around day four the swelling starts to ease, and most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. The surgeon makes that call.

  • Book a return ticket you can change
  • On the roughly ten-hour flight, keep your head raised, walk the aisle and drink water
  • Wear your compression garment if you have been given one

Recovery at home

Most swelling settles over weeks two to six, and most people are back at work within one to two weeks. Avoid strenuous exercise until the surgeon clears you. Over three to six months the tissues settle, the incision lines soften and fade, and the final result becomes clear. Healing scars should be protected from strong sun.

Risks include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, asymmetry, scarring and slow wound healing, and less commonly bleeding, infection, nerve irritation or revision surgery.

Our treatment guarantee covers surgical treatment for one year: medical complications and any revision the treating team judges clinically necessary are treated in İzmir at no charge, though flights and accommodation are your own cost.

Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa. Keep your GP informed and take your operation notes home. See our clinic facts and complaints process.

Cost and cover

The cost depends on the technique, any combined procedures and the length of your stay; your written plan sets out what is included. Medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic surgery abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery. More neck options are on our neck surgery overview and our facial surgery guide for South African patients.

What we will not do

We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise a result, and we will not operate if your health makes it unsafe. A long journey is not a reason to add procedures the surgeon does not think you need.

Frequently asked questions

How long after a neck lift can I fly home to South Africa?

Most neck lift patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, subject to the surgeon’s approval. Book a return ticket you can change in case you are asked to stay longer.

How long does a neck lift take?

The operation usually takes around two to four hours, depending on what needs to be done.

When can I go back to work after a neck lift?

Most patients return to work and normal daily activities within one to two weeks. Strenuous exercise should wait until the surgeon clears you.

Do I need a neck lift or neck liposuction?

A neck lift deals with loose skin and neck bands; liposuction removes fat where the skin is still firm. The surgeon decides which suits you after assessing your photographs and examining you.

Will my medical aid cover a neck lift?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery. Ask both specifically before you book.
