Neck liposuction in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide
Neck liposuction removes stubborn fat under the chin and around the neck to give a slimmer neck and a sharper jawline. It is one of the shorter facial procedures, which makes it simpler to plan from South Africa, but you still need to allow time in İzmir before the long flight home. This page covers who it suits, what happens and what recovery is like.
In short: Neck liposuction usually takes 45 to 90 minutes. Most patients are cleared to fly three to five days afterwards, subject to the surgeon’s approval, and many are back at work within a few days to a week. It suits fat under the chin when the skin is still firm; it does not remove loose skin. South Africans travel with an e-Visa via Istanbul to İzmir.

What neck liposuction does
The surgeon removes excess fat from beneath the chin and around the neck to improve the line of the neck and jaw. Unlike non-surgical fat-reduction treatments, the fat cells removed do not come back, although remaining fat can still change if your weight changes.
Liposuction does not tighten loose skin, so it works best for people with a double chin and good skin elasticity. If the skin is loose or there are neck bands, a neck lift is usually the better choice. The technique is described in full on the neck liposuction treatment page.
Who it suits
- People with excess fat beneath the chin or around the neck despite a healthy weight
- People who want a slimmer neck and a more defined jawline
- People with good skin elasticity and little or no loose neck skin
- People in good general health, non-smokers or able to stop before surgery, with realistic expectations
Suitability is confirmed after a medical assessment of your health, anatomy, photographs and goals. If liposuction is not the right option, the surgeon will tell you what would suit you better.
What happens in Turkey
On arrival in İzmir you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with the surgeon. The procedure usually takes 45 to 90 minutes. Afterwards there are dressing changes, nursing support and check-ups, and patients recover at Mandarin Grove between appointments.
How long to stay, and the flight home
For the first few days you rest with your head raised. Discomfort, swelling, bruising and tenderness are normal, and you will usually wear a compression garment to reduce swelling. Most patients are cleared to fly after three to five days; the surgeon makes the decision.
- Book a return ticket you can change, in case you are asked to stay a little longer
- Wear your compression garment on the flight if the surgeon advises it
- On the roughly ten-hour flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town, move regularly and drink water
- Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa, so the time change will not add to your tiredness
Recovery at home
Most swelling goes down over weeks two to six, and many patients return to work within a few days to a week. Avoid strenuous exercise until the surgeon clears you. The remaining swelling resolves over three to six months, when the final shape of the neck and jawline becomes clear.
Risks include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, uneven contour, asymmetry and slow wound healing, and less commonly bleeding, infection, nerve irritation or a need for revision surgery.
Our treatment guarantee covers surgical treatment for one year: medical complications and any revision the treating team judges clinically necessary are treated in İzmir at no charge, though flights and accommodation are your own cost.
Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is one hour ahead of South Africa. Keep your GP informed and take your operation notes home. See our clinic facts and complaints process.
Cost and cover
The cost depends on the area treated, any combined procedure and the length of your stay; your written plan lists what is included. Medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic treatment abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery. Other neck options are on our neck surgery overview, and all facial procedures are in our facial surgery guide for South African patients.
What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise a result, and we will not offer liposuction where loose skin means it would leave you disappointed.
Frequently asked questions
How long after neck liposuction can I fly home to South Africa?
Most patients are cleared to fly three to five days after neck liposuction, subject to the surgeon’s approval. Book a return ticket you can change.
How long does neck liposuction take?
The procedure usually takes around 45 to 90 minutes.
Will neck liposuction tighten loose skin?
No. Liposuction removes fat, not skin, so it works best when the skin is still firm. If the skin is loose, a neck lift is usually more suitable.
When can I go back to work?
Many patients return to work and normal daily activities within a few days to one week. Avoid strenuous exercise until the surgeon clears you.
Will my medical aid cover neck liposuction?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective cosmetic treatment abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery. Ask both specifically before you book.
