Male genital surgery in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

Male genital surgery covers operations on the penis, testicles and surrounding tissue. Some are done for a medical problem, some to correct a condition present from birth or caused by injury, and some for appearance. This page explains the main groups of procedures, what recovery involves, and what South African patients should plan for. It sits within our men’s health and urology guide.

In short: Male genital surgery in Turkey includes penile implants for erectile dysfunction, correction of curvature, testicular operations such as hydrocele and varicocele repair, circumcision and frenuloplasty, and cosmetic procedures. Depending on the operation, it is done under local or general anaesthesia. Most patients stay in Turkey from a few days to about a week, and sexual activity is usually off limits for around four to six weeks.

Procedures we arrange

Medical and functional

Reconstructive

  • Correction of curvature — for Peyronie’s disease, aiming to straighten the penis, improve function and reduce discomfort during erections
  • Hypospadias repair — in selected adult cases
  • Reconstruction — after injury or earlier surgery

Cosmetic

  • Girth enhancement with fat transfer — uses your own fat; results vary, and some men need a repeat treatment
  • Penile lengthening (ligament release) — can increase visible length when flaccid, but does not significantly increase erect length

Not sure which applies? Describe the problem in writing and the urologist will say which procedure, if any, fits, or whether a non-surgical option should come first.

Who it suits

  • Men with a functional problem, such as severe erectile dysfunction or curvature
  • Men with a condition present from birth, or after injury
  • Men considering a cosmetic procedure after a careful assessment
  • Men in good general health, without uncontrolled long-term conditions, and with realistic expectations

Every plan starts with a consultation, a medical history and an examination, with tests or imaging where needed.

Recovery, and the flight home

Mild swelling and bruising are common for the first few days, and pain is usually controlled with prescribed medication. Light daily activity can normally resume within a few days. Strenuous activity is avoided for several weeks, and sexual activity for about four to six weeks. You will be given wound care and hygiene instructions to follow closely. Final results can take weeks to months, depending on the operation.

Most patients stay in Turkey from a few days to about a week for the first checks; the surgeon decides when you are fit to fly. On the ten-hour flight home, wear loose clothing, choose an aisle seat, walk regularly and drink water. Book a return ticket you can change.

Risks

  • Infection
  • Bleeding or a haematoma
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry, or a cosmetic result you are not happy with
  • Temporary or permanent changes in sensation
  • The need for a further operation

With an implant, infection is the most serious complication and can mean the device has to be removed.

Follow-up in South Africa

Follow-up continues by message and video call with the same team; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Take home your operation notes and, after an implant, the device details for your doctor. Our treatment guarantee covers medical complications and clinically necessary revisions for one year from the date of treatment; it does not cover dissatisfaction with a cosmetic result that is within what was discussed beforehand. South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective surgery abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery, so check both. Clinic details are on the clinic facts page and our complaints page explains how problems are handled.

What we will not do

We will not operate without a urologist’s assessment, we will not promise a size or performance result, and we will not offer a cosmetic procedure when a medical problem needs treating first.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I stay in Turkey after male genital surgery?

Usually from a few days to about a week, depending on the operation. The surgeon decides when you are fit to fly home to South Africa.

When can I have sex again?

Usually after about four to six weeks, once the surgeon is satisfied that healing is complete. After an implant, you are taught how to use the device first.

Are the results of penile enlargement permanent?

Ligament release can give a lasting change in flaccid length but not a significant change in erect length. Fat transfer lasts for a variable time and may need repeating.

Will there be visible scars?

That depends on the technique and on how you heal. Surgeons usually place incisions where they are less visible.

Is male genital surgery only cosmetic?

No. Many operations are done for medical reasons, such as treating erectile dysfunction, correcting curvature or repairing a hydrocele or varicocele.
