For patients in South Africa
Adult circumcision in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide
Adult circumcision is a short operation to remove the foreskin, carried out for medical reasons such as a tight or infected foreskin, or for cultural, religious or personal reasons. This page explains how the procedure is done, what recovery involves, and what South African patients need to plan for the trip.
In short: South African men can have adult circumcision in Turkey with an e-Visa and a direct flight to Istanbul, then a short connection to İzmir. The procedure usually takes 20 to 40 minutes under local anaesthesia, with dissolvable stitches. Light activities usually resume within a few days and the wound heals in about two to four weeks.

Why adults have circumcision
Circumcision removes the foreskin, leaving the head of the penis (the glans) permanently exposed. Adults choose it for medical, cultural, religious or personal reasons. Medical reasons include:
- Phimosis — a tight foreskin that will not pull back
- Paraphimosis — a foreskin trapped behind the glans
- Repeated infections of the foreskin or glans, such as balanitis
- Scarring, ongoing irritation or inflammation, or difficulty keeping the area clean
A urological examination shows whether circumcision is needed medically. Full details are on the male circumcision treatment page, and related procedures, such as frenuloplasty, are covered in the male genital surgery guide and the men’s health guide.
Assessment and technique
You can start with an online consultation before you travel. In Turkey the assessment includes a physical examination, a review of your medical history and a discussion of the procedure and recovery. The surgeon chooses the technique: conventional surgical removal with stitches, a clamp-based method that helps control bleeding, or a laser-assisted method used in some cases.
- Local anaesthesia is usually used for adults; sedation or general anaesthesia is sometimes used
- The procedure usually takes 20 to 40 minutes
- Bleeding is controlled and the skin is closed with dissolvable stitches that do not need removing
Recovery
- Mild swelling, discomfort, some sensitivity of the glans and minor spotting are normal at first; discomfort is usually controlled with medication
- Light daily activities usually resume within a few days; avoid strenuous activity at first
- Wear loose clothing, keep the area clean and dry and follow the wound care instructions
- The wound usually heals in about two to four weeks; sexual activity is avoided for several weeks
Possible risks include bleeding, infection, swelling, temporary discomfort and, rarely, problems with wound healing. Careful technique and good aftercare reduce these risks.
Planning the trip from South Africa
There are direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul of around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir, where treatment takes place. South Africans need an e-Visa, explained in the e-Visa guide. Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa, so follow-up calls are easy to arrange. Circumcision is short, but how long you stay is set out in your written treatment plan; allow time for a wound check before the ten-hour flight home, and book a return ticket you can change.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing for the journey
- Take your treatment notes home in case your GP needs to see the wound
- Seek care promptly if you notice increasing redness, pain, bleeding or fever
- South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad; check with your scheme, and note that travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad
Follow-up and the guarantee
Follow-up continues by message, photograph and video call with the same team. Medical complications and clinically necessary revisions within one year are covered by our treatment guarantee: that treatment is carried out in İzmir at no charge, though flights and accommodation remain your own cost. It is not a promise of a particular result. The clinic facts page explains how we work, and the complaints page how problems are handled.
Pricing is transparent and agreed in writing before you travel; the cost mainly depends on the technique and anaesthesia used.
What we will not do
We will not book the procedure before a surgeon has assessed you, and we will not make claims about circumcision beyond what is medically established. If a foreskin problem can be treated more simply, or should be checked by your own doctor first, we will say so.
Frequently asked questions
Can adults have circumcision?
Yes. Circumcision can be carried out safely in adults, usually under local anaesthesia.
Is circumcision painful?
Local anaesthesia is used during the procedure, and discomfort afterwards is usually manageable with medication.
How long does healing take after adult circumcision?
Most wounds heal in about two to four weeks. Light activities usually resume within a few days, and sexual activity is avoided for several weeks.
Do the stitches need to be removed?
No. Dissolvable stitches are normally used, so there is nothing to remove after you get home.
Will my medical aid cover circumcision in Turkey?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad. Ask your scheme directly before you book.
