For patients in South Africa
Buttock lift in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide
A buttock lift removes loose, excess skin and reshapes the tissues beneath it to give a firmer, higher buttock contour. It is aimed at sagging after major weight loss or with age, and it lifts rather than enlarges. For South African patients the main planning points are the stay in İzmir, sitting during recovery and the long flight home.
In short: South Africans can have a buttock lift in Turkey with an e-Visa, a direct flight to Istanbul and a short connection to İzmir. The operation usually takes around two hours. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but sitting is restricted early in recovery and the flight home lasts around ten hours, so plan for the surgeon to ask you to stay longer.

Lift, implants or fat transfer?
A buttock lift deals with loose skin and position, not size. If you also want more volume, it can be combined with fat transfer (as in a BBL) or with buttock implants; which, if any, suits you is the surgeon’s call. Where loose skin also runs round the hips, abdomen and thighs, a body lift may be discussed instead. Our buttock shaping guide and body contouring guide compare the options, and the technique is described on the buttock lift treatment page.
Who it suits
- People with sagging or loose skin on the buttocks after significant weight loss or with age
- People whose buttocks have lost shape or firmness and who want a lift rather than extra size
- People close to their target weight who can keep it stable after surgery
- People in good general health who do not smoke, or can stop before surgery
Suitability is confirmed only after a surgeon has reviewed your medical history, photographs and goals.
How long to stay, and the flight home
In the first days you rest and avoid sitting or putting pressure on the buttocks, which protects the incisions. You recover at Mandarin Grove, where nurses check dressings and any drains; drains, if used, are usually removed between days four and seven, and you wear a compression garment. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days. A ten-hour flight soon after surgery means long sitting and a higher risk of blood clots, so the surgeon decides when you can fly and what precautions to take.
- Book a return ticket you can change
- Wear your compression garment on the flight as instructed
- Choose an aisle seat, stand and walk regularly, and drink water
- Tell us at the start about any history of blood clots, smoking or hormone medication
Recovery at home
Over weeks two to six swelling settles and light daily activities return, but long periods of sitting should still be limited early on. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, running and lower-body training wait until the surgeon clears you. Over three to six months the shape settles and the scars soften and fade; keeping a stable weight helps the result last.
Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Keep your GP informed. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within a year are covered by our treatment guarantee; that treatment is done in İzmir, and flights and accommodation remain your own responsibility.
Risks
The risks are discussed openly at consultation. They include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection (seroma) and slow wound healing, and less often bleeding, infection, blood clots, wound separation and changes in skin sensation.
What decides the cost
We do not quote prices here; after a surgeon’s review you receive a written treatment plan and quotation. The cost depends on how much skin needs removing, whether fat transfer or implants are added, and how long you stay. South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective surgery abroad, so check with yours.
What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a board-certified surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise a particular shape, and we will not operate if your health makes it unsafe. A long journey is not a reason to combine more than the surgeon judges safe. See clinic facts and our complaints page.
Frequently asked questions
How long after a buttock lift can I fly home to South Africa?
The surgeon decides. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home takes around ten hours, South African patients may be asked to stay longer.
Will a buttock lift make my buttocks bigger?
No. A buttock lift removes loose skin and lifts the buttocks; it does not add volume. If you want more size, it can be combined with fat transfer or buttock implants where the surgeon agrees.
When can I sit normally after a buttock lift?
Sitting and pressure on the buttocks are avoided in the first days and limited in the early weeks. The surgeon tells you when ordinary sitting is safe.
Is a buttock lift suitable after major weight loss?
Loose skin after significant weight loss is one of the main reasons for a buttock lift. You should be close to your target weight and able to keep it stable.
Will my medical aid cover a buttock lift?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic surgery abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment. Ask both specifically before you book.
