What is upper eyelid surgery?
Upper eyelid surgery, or upper blepharoplasty, removes excess upper-lid skin and may adjust fat where needed. The aim is to improve a heavy or hooded appearance. Your surgeon must assess the eyelid itself, the skin above it and brow position before proposing an operation.
Hooded eyelids, ptosis or a low brow?
“Droopy eyelids” can describe different problems. A fold of skin hanging over the lid is not the same as the eyelid edge sitting too low. They can occur together, so choosing a treatment from photographs or a procedure name alone is not enough.
Excess skin and hooded eyelids
Extra skin on the upper lid is called dermatochalasis. Upper blepharoplasty addresses this skin excess, with the incision generally placed along the upper-lid crease. The assessment should also check that enough skin remains for comfortable eyelid closure. Removing skin does not stop future ageing.
True eyelid droop: ptosis
With ptosis, the upper eyelid margin itself is low, sometimes covering part of the pupil. Assessment includes eyelid height, the lifting muscle and any effect on vision. Ptosis correction works on the lid-lifting mechanism; removing excess skin alone may not address that problem. Ask whether a separate ophthalmic assessment or a different operation is needed. Upper blepharoplasty versus brow lift
A lowered eyebrow can contribute to skin folding over the upper lid. Blepharoplasty does not lift the brow. A brow procedure may be discussed when brow position contributes to the concern, but a combination is not automatically necessary. Your written quotation should name the proposed operation and state whether both upper eyelids are included. Upper blepharoplasty alone, ptosis correction, brow surgery and a combined upper-and-lower eyelid operation are different scopes; one headline price should not be assumed to cover them all.

Days 1–3: Rest with your head elevated to help minimise swelling. Mild discomfort, swelling, bruising around the eyes, and temporary tightness are expected during this period. Cold compresses may be recommended to help reduce swelling.
Days 4–7: Swelling and bruising begin to improve, and the upper eyelids may still appear slightly swollen. Most patients feel comfortable resuming light daily activities and are typically able to fly home after 5–7 days, subject to their surgeon’s approval.
Weeks 2–6: The majority of swelling gradually subsides, revealing a brighter and more refreshed eye appearance. Most patients return to work and normal daily activities within 1–2 weeks, while strenuous exercise should be avoided until cleared by your surgeon.
