Vitamin C IV in Turkey from South Africa: who it suits and who should skip it

A vitamin C drip delivers high-dose vitamin C straight into a vein, so far more reaches the bloodstream than from tablets. It is offered as wellness support, for example during periods of tiredness, stress or recovery. It is not right for everyone: some kidney and blood conditions rule it out, which is why the medical consultation beforehand is required, not optional.

In short: A vitamin C infusion usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and you can go back to your day afterwards. A medical consultation is required first, and people with kidney problems, a history of kidney stones, G6PD deficiency or haemochromatosis may not be suitable. Effects vary from person to person.

What a vitamin C drip involves

A doctor reviews your history and decides the dose. The infusion then runs through a small needle in the arm, usually for 30 to 60 minutes, in a comfortable clinical room. Most people find it relaxing. You may feel the needle go in, and some people notice warmth or a metallic taste, which is uncommon and passes quickly. You are monitored briefly afterwards. The background is on our vitamin C IV page.

Who should not have it

This is the most important part of the page. Vitamin C IV may not be suitable if you have:

  • Severe kidney disease or other kidney problems
  • A history of kidney stones
  • G6PD deficiency, an inherited enzyme condition
  • Haemochromatosis, where the body stores too much iron
  • An allergy to any component of the infusion

If you are unsure about your kidney function or G6PD status, ask your GP in South Africa whether blood tests are worth doing before you travel, and bring the results with you.

Who it may suit

It is generally offered to adults in good general health, including people with low vitamin C levels or who want wellness support during a tiring period. Results vary: some people report more energy or a sense of well-being, others notice little change. How long any effect lasts depends on diet, lifestyle and overall health. It is not a substitute for medical care.

Sessions and aftercare

Some people have one session, others several; the plan is made after your assessment, and if more than one session is planned, the dates are arranged in advance. Afterwards, drink plenty of fluids, eat a balanced diet and report anything unusual to the team, who remain available throughout your stay.

Is it worth the trip from South Africa?

On its own, rarely. A flight of around ten hours from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul, then a short hop to İzmir, for an infusion lasting under an hour is hard to justify. It fits better as an extra during a stay for another planned treatment. You will need an e-Visa, and İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa. Medical schemes generally do not cover elective drips abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment, so check both. Other options are in our skin treatments guide and recovery boosters guide, and other drips include glutathione IV and NAD IV.

Our doctors are board-certified and our pricing is transparent; see clinic facts, our treatment guarantee and our complaints page.

What we will not do

We will not give a vitamin C drip without a medical consultation, we will not overlook a kidney or blood condition to make a booking, and we will not claim that a drip will protect you from illness.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a vitamin C drip take?

Usually 30 to 60 minutes. Most people return to normal activities straight afterwards.

Who should not have vitamin C IV?

People with severe kidney disease or other kidney problems, a history of kidney stones, G6PD deficiency, haemochromatosis or an allergy to the infusion components may not be suitable. A medical assessment decides.

Does a vitamin C drip hurt?

You may feel mild discomfort when the needle goes in, then very little during the infusion. Warmth or a metallic taste is uncommon and short-lived.

What decides the cost of vitamin C IV?

The dose, the number of sessions and any medical evaluation needed beforehand. A personal cost plan is given after consultation.

Will my medical aid cover a vitamin C drip?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective wellness drips abroad. Check with your scheme before you travel.
