Uvulectomy in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

The uvula is the small piece of soft tissue that hangs at the back of the roof of the mouth. If it is enlarged or long, it can contribute to snoring, a partly blocked airway, disturbed breathing during sleep or constant throat irritation. A uvulectomy removes all or part of it through the mouth. It is a smaller operation than UPPP, and this page covers what South African patients should know before they travel.

In short: A uvulectomy is done under local or general anaesthetic, depending on the case. Most patients are fit to fly two to three days later, subject to the surgeon’s approval, and recovery usually takes around two weeks. It only helps if the uvula is part of the problem, so an assessment comes first.

Who it may help

  • People whose snoring is linked to an enlarged or elongated uvula
  • Selected patients with obstructive sleep apnoea where the uvula contributes
  • People with ongoing throat irritation caused by the uvula

If your snoring has another cause, removing the uvula will not fix it. Send any sleep study results and ENT reports you have; if you have none, read our guides to the sleep study and snoring and sleep apnoea treatment. A uvulectomy is sometimes combined with soft palate surgery (UPPP) or a tonsillectomy. The treatment is described on the uvulectomy treatment page, and related operations are in our ENT surgery guide for South African patients.

The procedure

The surgeon removes all or part of the uvula through the mouth, under local or general anaesthetic depending on your case and what is done alongside it. There is no visible scar. Patients recover at Mandarin Grove, the recovery retreat near İzmir, with access to the medical team around the clock. In the first three days a sore throat, mild swelling, difficulty swallowing and some discomfort when speaking are normal, and are managed with prescribed pain relief, fluids and soft, cool food.

Flying home to South Africa

Most patients are fit to fly two to three days after a uvulectomy, subject to the surgeon’s approval. The trip home is around ten hours from Istanbul to Johannesburg or Cape Town, plus the short flight from İzmir, so a little extra margin is sensible.

  • Book a return ticket you can change
  • Keep avoiding smoking, alcohol and very hot or spicy food, including on the journey
  • Ask what to do about bleeding or increasing pain once you are home
  • Take home a written summary of the operation for your GP or ENT

Recovery and risks

From days four to seven most people feel more comfortable and can manage light daily activities, though mild discomfort may continue. By weeks two to four swallowing is easier and most have returned to work; strenuous exercise waits for the surgeon’s go-ahead. By weeks four to six healing is usually complete and any change in snoring is clear. Risks include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, swelling, changes in voice and delayed healing; more rarely bleeding, infection, airway swelling, persistent throat discomfort or the need for further treatment.

Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa, so follow-up by message and video call fits into a normal working day. Tell your GP before you travel and take home a written summary of the operation and any medication. Medical complications arising from the treatment, and any revision that becomes clinically necessary, are covered for one year by our treatment guarantee; any treatment under it is carried out in İzmir, while flights and accommodation remain your own responsibility. How problems after treatment are handled is set out on our complaints page.

What we will not do

We will not remove the uvula without an assessment showing it is part of the problem, we will not promise that snoring will stop, and we will not clear you to fly before the surgeon is happy with healing.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for a uvulectomy?

Most patients are fit to fly two to three days after surgery, subject to the surgeon’s approval. Because the journey to South Africa is long, allow a little extra time and book a flexible ticket.

Is a uvulectomy done under local or general anaesthetic?

Either, depending on your case and whether other procedures are done at the same time. The surgeon explains which before you agree to treatment.

Will a uvulectomy stop my snoring?

Only if the uvula is part of the cause. Snoring can come from the nose, the soft palate, the tonsils or elsewhere, so the surgeon assesses this first and cannot promise a result.

Is a uvulectomy the same as UPPP?

No. A uvulectomy removes all or part of the uvula only. UPPP also removes or reshapes tissue from the soft palate and sometimes the surrounding throat, and is a larger operation.

Will my medical aid cover a uvulectomy in Turkey?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad. Check with both before you book; we cannot promise either will pay.
