Snoring and sleep apnoea treatment in Turkey from South Africa

Loud snoring is common, and on its own it is often harmless. When it comes with pauses in breathing, choking at night or heavy daytime tiredness, it may be obstructive sleep apnoea, which needs proper diagnosis. This page explains assessment and treatment in İzmir, Turkey, for South African patients. The overview is on our snoring and sleep apnoea page, and the wider picture is in our ENT surgery guide.

In short: Snoring treatment in Turkey starts with finding where the airway narrows, usually with a sleep study and an ENT examination. Depending on the cause, options include tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, uvulectomy or uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. Surgery does not suit everyone with sleep apnoea, and the specialist will say so. South Africans travel with an e-Visa and a direct flight to Istanbul, then a short connection to İzmir.

Snoring or sleep apnoea?

Snoring is the sound of soft tissue vibrating as air passes through a narrowed airway. In obstructive sleep apnoea, the airway narrows or closes repeatedly during sleep, so breathing stops or becomes shallow for short periods. Signs worth mentioning to a doctor include:

  • Loud snoring most nights
  • Pauses in breathing that a partner has noticed
  • Waking with a choking feeling
  • Heavy tiredness during the day

Diagnosis comes first

A sleep study records your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate and other body functions while you sleep, and shows whether you have sleep apnoea and how severe it is. An ENT specialist then examines the nose, throat and palate to find where the airway narrows. If you have had one in South Africa, send the report.

Treatment options

Surgery aims to open the part of the airway that is causing the problem. Options we arrange include:

  • Tonsillectomy — removes enlarged tonsils, which can cause snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Adenoidectomy — removes enlarged adenoids that block breathing through the nose
  • Uvulectomy — removes all or part of a long or swollen uvula
  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty — removes or tightens soft tissue at the back of the throat

Where the blockage is in the nose, treatments in our nose and breathing treatments guide may help, such as turbinate reduction. For many people with sleep apnoea, a non-surgical option such as a CPAP machine worn at night is the main treatment. The specialist will tell you honestly if surgery is unlikely to help. If treatment is for a child, it is planned with the parents and the specialist team.

How long to stay in Turkey

Your stay depends on the treatment. Most patients are fit to fly two to three days after adenoidectomy and three to five days after tonsillectomy, subject to the surgeon’s approval. After tonsillectomy the sore throat takes around two weeks to settle, so plan soft food and rest.

Planning the trip from South Africa

  • Flights: direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir
  • Visa: South Africans apply for an e-Visa online before travelling; see the e-Visa guide
  • Fitness to fly: the surgeon decides when you are fit for the long flight home, so book a return ticket you can change
  • Time difference: İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa, which makes follow-up calls easy
  • Cover: South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, so check with your scheme first, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad

Follow-up at home

Ask for a written report of the operation and your sleep study results to take home, and share them with your GP. A repeat sleep study at home after healing may be advised to check the effect.

Follow-up continues by message and video call with the same team. Our treatment guarantee covers medical complications and clinically necessary revisions for one year from treatment; accepted claims are treated in İzmir at no charge, though flights and accommodation are your own. See clinic facts and our complaints page.

What we will not do

We will not operate without a clear diagnosis, we will not promise that surgery will stop snoring or cure sleep apnoea, and we will not recommend an operation when a non-surgical treatment would serve you better.

Frequently asked questions

Is snoring the same as sleep apnoea?

No. Snoring is the noise of vibrating tissue in a narrowed airway. In obstructive sleep apnoea the airway narrows or closes repeatedly during sleep, so breathing stops or becomes shallow. A sleep study shows which you have.

Do I need a sleep study before snoring surgery?

Usually, yes. It shows whether you have sleep apnoea and how severe it is. If you have already had one in South Africa, send the report to the specialist.

Will surgery cure my sleep apnoea?

Not always. Surgery can help when a specific blockage such as large tonsils is the cause, but many people with sleep apnoea are better served by a non-surgical treatment. The specialist will tell you honestly.

How long should I stay in Turkey after snoring surgery?

Most patients are fit to fly two to three days after adenoidectomy and three to five days after tonsillectomy, subject to the surgeon’s approval. Ask about your specific operation before booking flights.

What decides the cost of snoring treatment?

Whether a sleep study is needed, which operation is planned, whether procedures are combined, how long you stay and what the package includes. A firm figure is only possible after an assessment.
