Lip implant in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide
A lip implant is a soft, flexible implant, usually made of medical-grade silicone, that a surgeon slides inside the lip to add volume that does not wear off. It is a small operation, but it is still surgery, and South African patients need to stay long enough for the stitches to come out.
In short: A lip implant gives permanent, fixed volume, unlike filler, which has to be repeated. It is placed through tiny cuts at the corners of the mouth in roughly 30 to 60 minutes. Stitches usually come out after five to seven days, so plan to stay in İzmir for about a week. Implants can be removed later if you change your mind.

Implant or filler?
The choice is mostly about how long you want the change to last and how much control you want over it:
- Lip implant — permanent, fixed volume, needs a small operation, and can be taken out if necessary
- Dermal filler — temporary (typically 6 to 12 months), adjustable, no surgery, but needs repeat treatment
Implants come in different lengths and thicknesses, and the surgeon chooses the size from your lip shape and facial proportions. More detail is on the lip implant treatment page.
Who it suits
- People with naturally thin lips, or lips that have lost volume with age
- People who want a permanent result rather than repeat filler appointments
- People in good general health, who do not smoke or can stop while healing
- People with realistic expectations about size and shape
If you want to change the shape of the upper lip or show more of it, rather than simply add volume, a lip lift may suit you better. If you would rather use your own tissue, see lip fat transfer.
How it is done
After an online consultation, the surgeon in İzmir checks your lips, symmetry and medical history and agrees the implant size with you. The operation is done under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia. A small cut is made at each corner of the mouth, a narrow tunnel is made inside the lip, and the implant is passed through and centred. The cuts are closed with fine stitches.
How long to stay, and the flight home
Expect swelling, mild bruising, some tightness and tenderness at first. Most people are back to light activity within a few days. The stitches usually come out at five to seven days, so a stay of about a week lets the surgeon remove them and check the implant position before you fly. Direct flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir. South Africans need an e-Visa before travelling. Book a return ticket you can change.
- Sleep with your head raised for the first nights
- Keep lip movement gentle and keep your mouth clean
- Do not smoke while the cuts heal
- Ask for a note of the implant type and size to keep with your records
Recovery at home
Most swelling settles within one to two weeks, and you see the final shape once it has gone. The implant itself is permanent, though the lips and the skin around them will still age naturally. Follow-up continues by photograph and message; İzmir is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Let your GP know you have had the procedure.
Surgical treatments are covered by our treatment guarantee for one year from the date of treatment. It covers medical complications from the operation and any revision the treating team judges clinically necessary; that treatment is carried out in İzmir at no charge, but flights and accommodation are your own responsibility. It does not cover a preference for a different look where the result falls within what was discussed before surgery.
Risks
Possible problems include swelling and bruising, infection, the implant moving out of position, asymmetry, an implant you can see or feel, and the need to adjust or remove it. Careful sizing and positioning reduce these risks but do not remove them.
What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has seen your photographs and examined you, we will not promise a particular look, and we will not fit a larger implant than the surgeon thinks your lips can carry. You can read our clinic facts and complaints page before you decide. For other options see the face surgery guide for South African patients.
Frequently asked questions
Are lip implants permanent?
Yes. A lip implant is designed to stay in place and give permanent volume, although the lips and surrounding skin continue to age naturally.
Can a lip implant be removed?
Yes. The implant can be taken out if you change your mind or if there is a problem with it.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey for a lip implant?
Plan for about a week. The stitches at the corners of the mouth usually come out after five to seven days, and the surgeon checks the implant before you fly home to South Africa.
How long does the swelling last?
Most swelling goes down within one to two weeks. The final shape is visible once it has fully settled.
Will my medical aid pay for it?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic lip surgery, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad. Check with both before you book.
