Lip fat transfer in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

Lip fat transfer adds volume to the lips using your own fat instead of a synthetic filler or an implant. The fat is purified and placed in small amounts, so the result feels soft and blends in with your own lip tissue. This page explains who it suits, what to expect after surgery, and what South African patients should plan for around the long flight home.

In short: Lip fat transfer uses your own purified fat to make the lips fuller, softer and better defined. The operation takes around 45 to 60 minutes. Most patients fly home after five to seven days. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed, so the lips settle over the following months, and a top-up is sometimes needed.

Who it suits

  • People who want fuller, softer lips using their own tissue
  • People looking for a longer-lasting alternative to repeat filler
  • People with enough spare body fat to take a small amount from
  • People in good general health, who do not smoke or can stop before surgery, with realistic expectations

Fat transfer adds natural volume but gives less exact control over size than a lip implant. If the upper lip is long rather than thin, a lip lift may suit you better. More detail is on the lip fat transfer treatment page.

How it is done

You send photographs and your goals first, and receive a surgical plan. On arrival in İzmir you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with the surgeon. A small amount of fat is taken from an area such as the abdomen or thighs with a thin cannula, purified, and then injected into the lips in fine layers. The operation typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.

How long to stay, and the flight home

Most patients are able to fly home after five to seven days, once the surgeon has checked you. Direct flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir. South Africans need an e-Visa before travelling. A changeable return ticket gives you room if the surgeon wants to see you again before you leave.

  • Expect swelling and bruising of the lips, and some at the area the fat was taken from
  • Sleep with your head raised in the first nights
  • Do not smoke: it reduces how much of the fat survives
  • Ask the surgeon how long to avoid pressure on the lips

Recovery at home

Swelling goes down over the first weeks, and the lips can look over-full at first. Part of the transferred fat is reabsorbed by the body, so the lips settle gradually over the following months; the fat that remains gives a long-lasting result. Follow-up continues by photograph and message, and İzmir is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Let your GP know about the procedure.

Surgical treatments are covered by our treatment guarantee for one year from the date of treatment. It covers medical complications from the operation and any revision the treating team judges clinically necessary; that treatment is carried out in İzmir at no charge, but flights and accommodation are your own responsibility. It does not cover a preference for a different look where the result falls within what was discussed before surgery.

Risks

The surgeon discusses the risks with you openly. They include swelling, bruising, temporary unevenness, partial reabsorption of the fat and asymmetry, and less often infection, bleeding, fat necrosis (fat that does not survive and becomes firm), or the need for a further session of fat grafting to reach the result you want.

What we will not do

We will not promise how much of the fat will remain, we will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has assessed you, and we will not recommend fat transfer if you do not have enough fat to take. You can read our clinic facts and complaints page first, and see other options in the face surgery guide for South African patients.

Frequently asked questions

Is lip fat transfer permanent?

The fat that survives in its new place gives a long-lasting result. Some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed, so the lips settle over several months, and a further session is sometimes needed.

Where is the fat taken from?

A small amount is taken from an area with spare fat, such as the abdomen or thighs. The surgeon decides the best area at your consultation.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

Most patients fly home after five to seven days, once the surgeon has checked them. The flight from Istanbul to Johannesburg or Cape Town takes around ten hours.

Is it better than filler?

It uses your own tissue and lasts longer than filler, but it gives less exact control over size and needs a small operation. The surgeon can explain which suits your lips.

Will my medical aid pay for it?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic lip treatment, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad. Check with both before you book.
