For patients in South Africa
Breast reconstruction in Turkey from South Africa
Breast reconstruction rebuilds the shape, volume and appearance of the breast after a mastectomy, breast cancer treatment, injury or another condition that has affected the breast. This page explains the approaches, how the trip has to fit around your cancer care, and what South African patients should plan before travelling to İzmir.
In short: Reconstruction is planned individually and may use implants, tissue expanders or your own tissue. If you have had breast cancer, it must be planned together with your oncology and breast team at home, and they decide whether the timing is right. Most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but your own plan may differ.

Plan it with your team at home first
If your reconstruction follows breast cancer, your oncologist and breast team in South Africa remain responsible for your cancer care. Ask them first whether reconstruction is appropriate now, and get written reports on your diagnosis, surgery, any radiotherapy or chemotherapy, and follow-up plan for our surgeon to review.
Who it may suit
- you have had, or are planning, a mastectomy because of breast cancer or another condition
- you want to restore breast shape, volume and symmetry after tissue loss
- you are in good general health and do not smoke, or can stop before surgery
- you are close to your ideal weight and can keep it stable
- you have realistic expectations about the process, result and recovery
Suitability is confirmed after a review of your history, previous treatment, photographs and goals.
Approaches
Depending on your anatomy and needs, the surgeon may recommend implants, tissue expanders, or techniques that use your own tissue. Your written plan sets out the stages and how long you stay in Turkey.
Your time in İzmir
On arrival you have health checks, blood tests and a face-to-face meeting with the surgeon. Surgery is performed by board-certified plastic surgeons and typically takes around two to three hours. You then recover at Mandarin Grove, the recovery retreat near İzmir, with nursing support, dressing changes and planned checks.
- Days 1–3: rest with your upper body raised; tightness, swelling and bruising are expected, and you may wear a surgical bra or compression garment
- Days 4–7: any drains usually come out; most patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days
- Weeks 2–6: the new shape begins to settle; no heavy lifting, strenuous exercise or upper-body workouts until the surgeon agrees
- Months 3–6: the breast softens and looks more natural as remaining swelling resolves
Risks
Risks include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection (seroma), slow wound healing, changes in breast or nipple sensation, scarring and asymmetry, and less commonly bleeding, infection, implant-related problems or the need for further corrective procedures. The surgeon explains your own risks, taking your previous treatment into account.
Planning the trip from South Africa
Direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir. South African passport holders need an e-Visa before travelling; the e-Visa guide explains how to apply.
- Book a changeable return ticket; the surgeon decides when you can fly
- Wear your surgical bra on the flight and let others lift your luggage
- Choose an aisle seat, walk regularly and drink water
- If an implant or expander is used, take its brand, size and placement home with your operation notes
Medical schemes generally do not cover planned treatment abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes it; check both in writing before booking. Pricing is transparent and given in writing after review; the cost depends mainly on the approach, the number of stages and the length of stay.
Follow-up at home
Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call; İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa. Send a copy of your operation notes to your oncology and breast team so they can continue your care. Under our treatment guarantee, complications and clinically necessary revisions within one year are treated in İzmir at no charge for that treatment; flights and accommodation are your own cost. What we will not do
We will not plan reconstruction without your medical reports, go against the advice of your treating cancer team, promise a particular result, or operate if your health makes it unsafe. We do not replace your cancer follow-up at home.
