LASEK vs LASIK: Differences, Risks and Suitability
LASEK and LASIK are laser vision-correction procedures that reshape the cornea. The main difference is how the surface is accessed: LASIK creates a corneal flap, while LASEK treats beneath the loosened surface epithelium without a stromal flap. Neither procedure is automatically better for every eye.
How suitability is assessed
An assessment may consider prescription stability, corneal thickness and shape, tear film, pupil size, eye health, medicines, occupation and lifestyle. Thin or irregular corneas, dry eye and other findings may affect whether either procedure is advisable.
Key practical differences
| Consideration | LASIK | LASEK |
|---|---|---|
| Corneal access | Flap is created | Surface epithelium is loosened |
| Early recovery | Often faster, but varies | Often more gradual, but varies |
| Flap-related risk | Present | No LASIK flap |
| Suitability | Depends on full assessment | Depends on full assessment |
Risks and alternatives
Possible risks include pain, dry eye, glare, halos, haze, infection, fluctuating or reduced vision, under- or over-correction and further treatment. LASIK also has flap-related risks. Glasses may still be required. Alternatives can include glasses, contact lenses, PRK, SMILE, lens-based procedures or no surgery.
Results, recovery and costs
No percentage or timetable can predict an individual result. Follow-up, medicines, driving and return to work depend on clinical advice and healing. A quotation should identify the procedure for each eye, tests, technology, clinician, facility, medicines and follow-up included. Insurance or finance does not establish suitability.
