Genioplasty and Mentoplasty: Options, Risks and Recovery

Genioplasty or mentoplasty refers to surgery that changes chin position, shape or projection. Options may include moving the chin bone, using an implant or another tailored approach. These procedures are not interchangeable.

Assessment and planning

The surgeon should assess facial and dental proportions, jaw relationship, bite, chin anatomy, asymmetry, nerve function, health, medicines, smoking, previous procedures and expectations. Jaw or dental assessment may be needed when the concern is not limited to the chin.

Options and limitations

A sliding genioplasty moves the chin bone; an implant adds projection; selected injectable treatment may offer temporary contour change. Each has different limitations and risks. Surgery cannot guarantee facial harmony, confidence or a transformed appearance.

Risks and recovery

Risks include bleeding, infection, scars, asymmetry, contour irregularity, altered lower-lip or chin sensation, dental-root injury, implant movement or exposure, bone-healing problems, dissatisfaction and revision. Swelling and recovery vary.
