Cosmetic Eye Surgery Options: Assessment, Risks and Limits

Cosmetic eye surgery can include upper or lower blepharoplasty, brow surgery, canthoplasty and selected procedures around the orbit. Similar-looking concerns can have different causes, so an eye and eyelid assessment should come before choosing an operation.

Common procedures and their limits

• Upper blepharoplasty: removes selected excess skin and sometimes fat; it is not the same as ptosis repair.
• Lower blepharoplasty: repositions or removes selected tissue around lower-eyelid bags; it cannot guarantee the removal of every line or dark circle.
• Ptosis repair: addresses eyelid-lifting function when the lid margin is low.
• Brow lift: changes brow position and may affect upper-eyelid skin appearance.
• Canthoplasty or canthopexy: changes or supports the outer eyelid and is not suitable for every cosmetic request.

Assessment

A clinician should review vision, pupils and eye movement when indicated, dry-eye symptoms, eyelid position and closure, brow position, skin, previous surgery, medicines, smoking and health conditions. Sudden eyelid drooping, double vision, pupil change, weakness or severe headache requires urgent medical assessment rather than cosmetic booking.

Risks and recovery

Risks may include bleeding, infection, dry or irritated eyes, scarring, asymmetry, difficulty closing the eyes, eyelid-position problems, double vision, visual disturbance and further surgery. Recovery varies by procedure and patient; tables promising a fixed duration or result are not reliable for an individual.
