Oral cyst removal in Turkey from South Africa: what to expect

Oral cyst removal is surgery to take out a cyst from the jawbone or the soft tissue of the mouth before it damages the bone or teeth around it. This page explains, for patients travelling from South Africa, when removal is needed, what the operation involves, how long to stay in Turkey and how follow-up works once you are home.

In short: Most patients return home within three to five days of oral cyst removal. The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on complexity, and a bone graft is sometimes recommended. Send existing X-rays before booking, and take your imaging home in case follow-up monitoring is advised.

What an oral cyst is

An oral cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms in the jawbone or in the soft tissue of the mouth. Many are benign and grow slowly, sometimes without symptoms at first, but as they enlarge they can cause pain, infection, bone loss or damage to nearby teeth. They can be linked to impacted teeth, untreated infection, inflammation around the roots of teeth or developmental causes; the surgeon works out which applies to you at the assessment.

What the surgery involves

Oral cyst removal is more involved than a simple extraction. The surgeon removes the cyst while keeping as much healthy bone and tissue as possible. Planning uses digital imaging to judge the size, position and type of cyst before the day of surgery. Depending on what is found:

  • a bone graft may be recommended if the cyst has caused significant bone loss, to help the jaw regenerate
  • neighbouring teeth can often be kept, though a badly affected tooth may occasionally need root canal treatment or extraction
  • the surgeon will discuss any of this with you before treatment, not after

The treatment is described in full on our oral cyst removal page, and related procedures are on the oral surgery guide for South Africans.

Before you travel

Send any X-rays or scans you already have from a dentist in South Africa with your enquiry. They help the surgeon judge whether the cyst should be removed or simply watched, and whether extra treatment such as a graft is likely. Do not book flights until a plan has been confirmed.

How long the trip takes

Most patients go home within three to five days. Mild swelling and discomfort are common for the first few days. Initial recovery usually takes one to two weeks, while the bone where the cyst was may take several months to heal fully, depending on the size of the cyst.

  • Flights: direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir, where treatment takes place
  • Visa: South Africans apply for an e-Visa online before travelling; see the e-Visa guide
  • Time difference: İzmir is only one hour ahead of South Africa, so follow-up calls are easy to arrange
  • Return date: the surgeon confirms when you can fly, so keep your ticket flexible
  • Records: ask for your surgical notes and imaging to take home, especially if follow-up scans are recommended

Aftercare in South Africa

Follow the aftercare instructions, keep the area clean and take the prescribed medication. Follow-up continues by message and video call with the same team. Tell your dentist at home about the treatment and book a check-up after you return; if the surgeon recommends monitoring imaging, your dentist can arrange it with the records you bring back.

Our treatment guarantee covers surgical treatment for one year from the date of treatment, for medical complications and any clinically necessary revision. Covered treatment is carried out in İzmir at no charge; flights and accommodation remain your own cost. The board-certified surgeons are listed on clinic facts, and our complaints process is published.

What we will not do

We will not operate on a cyst that only needs monitoring, we will not remove a tooth that can reasonably be kept, and we will not start before you have seen and agreed the plan, including any graft.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need to stay in Turkey for oral cyst removal?

Most patients return home within three to five days, depending on the size and location of the cyst and how recovery is going. Book a return ticket you can change.

Does every oral cyst need to be removed?

Not always. Small cysts may simply be monitored, but larger or growing cysts are often removed to prevent infection, bone loss, damage to neighbouring teeth or recurrence.

Is oral cyst removal painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic, sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on how complex the surgery is. Mild swelling and discomfort afterwards are normal and are usually controlled with prescribed medication.

Can the cyst come back?

Complete removal greatly reduces the risk, but some types of cyst need long-term monitoring. If follow-up imaging is advised, it can be arranged with a dentist in South Africa using the records you take home.

Will my medical aid cover oral cyst removal in Turkey?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad. Ask both specifically before you book.
