For patients in South Africa
Labiaplasty in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide
Labiaplasty is an operation to reduce or reshape the labia minora (the inner folds) and, in some cases, the labia majora (the outer folds). Many women look into it because of physical discomfort: irritation from clothing, during exercise or cycling, or difficulty with hygiene. For South African patients the operation is the same as for anyone else; what needs extra planning is healing well before a long flight home. This page covers both, and the questions to ask before you book.
In short: South Africans can have labiaplasty in Turkey with an e-Visa and a direct flight to Istanbul, then a short connection to İzmir. The operation usually takes one to two hours, and most patients return to normal daily activities within a few weeks. The surgeon decides when you are fit to fly, and because the flight home takes around ten hours, keep your return date flexible.

What the procedures involve
Labia vary widely in size, shape and symmetry from one woman to another, and this normal variation is not a medical problem. Surgery is considered when the tissue causes discomfort or a concern you want to discuss with a surgeon. The procedures offered within our female gynaecological treatments include:
- Labiaplasty, trim technique — excess tissue is removed along the outer edge of the labia minora
- Labiaplasty, wedge technique — a wedge-shaped section is removed from the centre, keeping the natural outer edge
- Labia majora reduction — excess tissue of the outer folds is reduced
- Clitoral hood reduction (hoodectomy) — excess hood skin is removed without altering the clitoris; it is often combined with labiaplasty
- Vaginoplasty — a separate, larger operation to reconstruct or repair the vaginal canal and supporting tissues, for reconstructive or functional reasons
The surgeon chooses the technique from your anatomy and will discuss your reasons and expectations with you openly. See the labiaplasty treatment page, hoodectomy, vaginoplasty and the full list of female gynaecologic treatments.
Who it suits
- Women with enlarged labia (labial hypertrophy) causing irritation or discomfort in daily activities
- Women with labial asymmetry, or changes after childbirth or with age
- People in stable overall health, who are able to stop smoking before surgery
- People whose anatomy is fully developed: surgery is normally deferred until then
Preparation includes a review of your medical history, a gynaecological examination and a check of your medicines, as some increase bleeding risk. Tell us at the start about any medicines and medical conditions.
How long to stay, and the flight home
The operation is done in İzmir under local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia, and takes one to two hours. You can recover at Mandarin Grove near İzmir. The journey home is a short flight to Istanbul, then a direct flight of around ten hours to Johannesburg or Cape Town, much of it sitting down. The surgeon checks your healing before clearing you to fly; book a return ticket you can change.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing and underwear for the journey
- Ask the team whether a soft cushion would help you sit more comfortably
- Pack the wipes, pads and any medicines you were given, and keep them in your hand luggage
- Follow the hygiene instructions on board: keep the area clean and dry
- Choose an aisle seat so you can stand, walk and use the bathroom easily
Recovery at home
Swelling, mild discomfort, temporary sensitivity and some bruising are expected in the early weeks. Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing, and avoid strenuous exercise. Sexual activity should be avoided during the healing period, until the surgeon confirms you have healed. Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few weeks.
As with any surgery, risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, temporary changes in sensation and asymmetry. Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within a year are covered by our treatment guarantee. Keep your GP or gynaecologist informed. More about the team is on the clinic facts page, and our complaints process is published.
What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a surgeon has reviewed you, we will not promise a result, and we will not operate if your health makes it unsafe. A long journey is not a reason to add more procedures to one operation than the surgeon judges safe.
Frequently asked questions
How soon after labiaplasty can I fly home to South Africa?
The surgeon decides, after checking how you are healing. Because the journey home takes around ten hours of sitting, plan a flexible return ticket and allow extra days in İzmir if the surgeon advises it.
How long does labiaplasty take, and what anaesthesia is used?
The operation usually takes one to two hours and is done under local anaesthesia with sedation, or under general anaesthesia, depending on the surgical plan. The incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches.
When can I go back to normal activities?
Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few weeks. Strenuous exercise and sexual activity should be avoided during the healing period, until the surgeon confirms healing is complete.
Can labiaplasty be combined with a clitoral hood reduction?
Yes, in some cases. A clitoral hood reduction (hoodectomy) is often combined with labiaplasty when the surgeon judges it appropriate for your anatomy.
Will my medical aid cover labiaplasty?
South African medical schemes generally do not cover cosmetic genital surgery, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery abroad. Ask your scheme and your insurer specifically before you book.
