Joint replacement in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide

Joint replacement removes the damaged surfaces of a worn joint and replaces them with artificial components, to relieve pain and restore movement when other treatment has stopped working. We arrange knee and hip replacement in İzmir. For South African patients, what needs careful planning is the assessment, the stay, the ten-hour flight home and months of rehabilitation.

In short: An orthopaedic surgeon reviews your X-rays and reports before anything is booked. Most patients are walking with a walker or crutches and cleared to fly after five to seven days, but the surgeon may ask South African patients to stay longer because of the long flight. Rehabilitation continues at home for three to six months, so arrange a physiotherapist and a local doctor before you travel.

Knee or hip: the two guides

The overview is on the joint replacement surgeries page. Both are part of our orthopaedic surgery guide for South African patients, which also covers sports injuries, spine and foot surgery.

Who joint replacement suits

Joint replacement is considered for severe pain, stiffness or loss of movement that has not improved with medication, physiotherapy, injections or other non-surgical treatment. The common causes are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, an old injury or, for the hip, a fracture or avascular necrosis.

Send recent X-rays, any MRI scans, letters from your doctor and a list of your medicines. The surgeon may decide that a partial knee replacement is enough, that more tests are needed, or that surgery is not yet the right step.

The stay in Turkey

The operation usually takes one to two hours. You are encouraged to stand and start walking with a physiotherapist on the day of surgery or the next day. After the hospital stay, patients recover at Mandarin Grove, our recovery retreat near İzmir, with physiotherapy and check-ups continuing.

Most patients are walking with a walker or crutches and are cleared to fly after five to seven days. That is the surgeon’s decision, not a fixed date, so book a return ticket you can change.

The flight home and clot risk

A ten-hour flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town soon after leg surgery raises the risk of blood clots. Ask the surgeon about your risk and any blood-thinning medication, and tell us at the start about any history of clots, smoking or hormone medication.

  • Ask for airport assistance and an aisle seat
  • Wear any compression stockings you are given, move your feet and ankles often, and drink water
  • Keep your walking aid with you, and do not lift heavy luggage

Rehabilitation at home

Recovery does not end when you land. Light daily activities usually return within three to six weeks for a hip and four to six weeks for a knee, and full recovery takes three to six months. Physiotherapy is an essential part of that, so plan it before you travel:

  • Agree who will follow you up in South Africa, and see your GP soon after you are home
  • Book a physiotherapist who can start soon after you land
  • Take home the operation notes, implant details, X-rays and discharge letter
  • Arrange help at home for the first weeks

Risks

Joint replacement is a well-established operation, but it carries real risks: pain, swelling and stiffness, blood clots, infection, slow wound healing, loosening of the implant and, more rarely, nerve or blood vessel injury, instability or the need for revision surgery. A hip can dislocate. Many modern implants last 15 to 20 years or longer, but this depends on age, activity, weight and general health.

What decides the cost

The cost depends on which joint is replaced, whether it is a partial or total replacement, your medical needs and how long you stay. Pricing is transparent: you receive a written plan setting out what is included before you decide.

Follow-up and what we will not do

Follow-up continues by message and video call with the same team; Turkey is only one hour ahead of South Africa. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within one year are covered by our treatment guarantee. See the clinic facts page and our complaints process.

We will not confirm a plan before an orthopaedic surgeon has reviewed your scans, we will not promise a result, and we will not operate if your health makes it unsafe.

Frequently asked questions

How long after joint replacement can I fly home to South Africa?

The surgeon decides. Most knee and hip replacement patients are cleared to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home takes around ten hours and clot risk matters, South African patients may be asked to stay longer.

Can both hips be replaced at the same time?

In selected patients it may be possible. Ask about your own case: the surgeon decides from your health, mobility and medical history.

Do I need physiotherapy after joint replacement?

Yes. Physiotherapy starts in Turkey on the day of surgery or the next day and has to continue at home for months. Book a physiotherapist in South Africa before you travel.

How long does a knee or hip replacement last?

Many modern implants last 15 to 20 years or longer, depending on age, activity level, weight and general health. The surgeon will discuss what to expect in your case.

Will my medical aid cover joint replacement in Turkey?

South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, and standard travel insurance usually excludes planned surgery. Check with your scheme before you book.
