Hearing aids in Turkey from South Africa: what to plan before you travel
Hearing aids are fitted after a hearing assessment and programmed to your own hearing profile. This page explains what that involves in İzmir, how long you need to stay and, just as importantly, how you will get adjustments and servicing once you are back in South Africa. Plan the aftercare first.
In short: Hearing aid fitting in Turkey starts with an assessment by an ENT specialist or audiologist, followed by selection, fitting and programming of digital hearing aids. Most people can fly home the same day or within one to two days. Hearing improves once the aids are fitted, but the brain takes a few weeks to adapt, and later adjustments and servicing need to happen at home.

What the assessment and fitting involve
Hearing aids help with many types and degrees of hearing loss, whether from ageing, noise, illness or other conditions. First, an ENT specialist or audiologist assesses your hearing to find the type and severity of the loss. The hearing aids are then chosen, fitted and programmed to match your hearing profile. Modern devices are discreet, and many offer rechargeable batteries, Bluetooth connection and background noise reduction.
If the assessment points to a problem that surgery or another treatment could address, the specialist will say so. See the ear treatments guide and the wider ENT surgery guide for other options.
Who it may suit
- Adults with hearing loss confirmed by a hearing test
- People who are already planning a trip to İzmir, for example for other treatment
- People who have a local audiologist willing to look after the aids afterwards
Hearing loss that comes on suddenly is different. It is an emergency and must be checked in South Africa straight away, not managed with a hearing aid trip.
Is the trip worth it for hearing aids alone?
Often not on its own. Hearing aids usually need fine-tuning in the weeks after fitting as you get used to them, and they need cleaning, repairs and reprogramming over the years. That work is done in person by an audiologist. If no one near you in South Africa can adjust the model you are fitted with, you could end up with a device you cannot easily service. Ask before you travel which brand and model is proposed, and check with an audiologist at home that they can support it.
How long to stay, and the flight home
Most people can fly home the same day or within one to two days of the assessment and fitting. Improvement in hearing is immediate once the aids are fitted and programmed, although it can take a few weeks for the brain to adapt fully to the new sounds. There is no wound, so the flight itself is not a medical concern after a fitting alone.
- Flights: direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul take around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir
- Visa: South Africans apply for an e-Visa online before travelling; see the e-Visa guide
- Records: take home your hearing test results, the make and model of each aid, the programming settings and the warranty papers
- Time difference: İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa, which makes follow-up calls easy
- Cover: South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, so check with your scheme before you book; standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad
Adjustments and servicing at home
Book an appointment with an audiologist in South Africa for the weeks after you return, so the settings can be checked once you have worn the aids in daily life. Ask how warranty repairs would work if a device fails at home. Our team stays in touch by message and video call, but cannot clean or reprogram a device remotely in every case. Our treatment guarantee covers medical complications arising from treatment for one year; it is not a promise about how well a device suits you. See also the clinic facts page, the complaints page and our hearing aid solutions page.
What we will not do
We will not fit hearing aids without a hearing assessment, we will not promise a particular level of hearing, and we will not recommend the trip if you have no realistic way to have the aids adjusted and serviced at home.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I need to stay in Turkey for hearing aids?
Most people fly home the same day or within one to two days of the assessment and fitting. The specialist confirms the plan once your hearing has been tested.
Will I hear better straight away?
Hearing improves as soon as the aids are fitted and programmed, but the brain usually takes a few weeks to adapt fully to the new sounds.
Who adjusts my hearing aids in South Africa?
An audiologist near you. Before you travel, check that a local audiologist can support the brand and model proposed, and take home the device details and settings.
Is it worth travelling from South Africa just for hearing aids?
Often not on its own, because adjustments and servicing happen at home over years. It makes more sense combined with other planned treatment and a local audiologist ready to help.
What decides the cost of hearing aids?
The type of hearing loss, the device chosen and its features, whether one or both ears are fitted, any tests needed and what the package includes. A firm figure follows assessment.
