For patients in South Africa
Gynaecomastia surgery in Turkey from South Africa: a plain guide
Gynaecomastia (spelt gynecomastia in American English) is enlarged breast tissue in men. Surgery removes the excess glandular tissue and fat, and loose skin where needed. A related operation, male chest reduction, deals mainly with sagging chest skin after major weight loss. This page covers both for men travelling from South Africa.
In short: South African men can have gynaecomastia surgery or male chest reduction in İzmir, Turkey, with an e-Visa and a direct flight to Istanbul, then a short connection. Each operation typically takes two to three hours. Most patients are ready to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home takes around ten hours, the surgeon may ask you to stay longer.

Gynaecomastia surgery or male chest reduction?
The two are planned differently because the problem is different:
- Gynaecomastia surgery — for a chest enlarged by glandular tissue, fat or both. Fat responds to liposuction; glandular tissue does not shrink with diet or exercise and has to be removed
- Male chest reduction — for sagging chest skin after significant weight loss; loose skin is removed and the chest reshaped
The surgeon decides which you need after assessing your health, photographs and goals. See the gynecomastia treatment page and the male chest reduction page.
Who it suits
- Men whose chest has not improved with diet and exercise
- Men who feel self-conscious without a shirt or have tenderness in the chest
- Men at or near their ideal weight who can keep it stable after surgery
- Non-smokers in good general health, or men able to stop smoking before surgery
Gynaecomastia can be linked to hormonal changes, genetics, some medications, weight gain, ageing or an underlying medical condition, so tell us about any medicines you take; the surgeon considers the likely cause before recommending surgery.
How long to stay, and the flight home
On arrival you have health checks, blood tests and a meeting with the surgeon. After the operation you recover at Mandarin Grove near İzmir, wearing a compression garment continuously and resting with your upper body slightly raised. Drains, if used, usually come out between days four and seven, and most men are ready to fly after five to seven days. A ten-hour flight to Johannesburg or Cape Town soon after surgery raises the risk of blood clots, so the surgeon may ask you to stay longer. Book a return ticket you can change.
- Wear your compression garment on the flight, as instructed
- Choose an aisle seat, stand and walk regularly, and drink water
- Ask for help with luggage, and tell us early about any history of blood clots or smoking
Recovery at home
Over weeks two to six the swelling goes down and most men return to normal daily life, but heavy lifting, chest workouts and strenuous exercise wait until the surgeon approves. The final shape shows over three to six months. Incisions are placed discreetly, often at the edge of the areola or in natural creases; scars are permanent but usually fade well. Removed glandular tissue does not grow back, and a stable weight helps the result last.
Risks include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid collection (seroma), delayed wound healing, contour irregularities, asymmetry and visible scarring, and less often bleeding, infection, blood clots or changes in nipple sensation.
Follow-up continues by photograph, message and video call with the same team; İzmir is one hour ahead of South Africa. Keep your GP informed and bring home your operation notes. Complications and clinically necessary revisions within one year are covered by our treatment guarantee; that treatment is done in İzmir, and flights and accommodation are your own responsibility. What decides the cost
We give no prices here; after a surgeon’s review you receive a written treatment plan and quotation stating what is included. The cost depends on whether you need glandular tissue removed, liposuction, skin removal or a combination, whether other procedures are added, and how long you stay.
What we will not do
We will not confirm a plan before a board-certified surgeon has reviewed you, promise a particular chest shape, or operate if your health makes it unsafe. Distance is no reason to combine more than the surgeon judges safe. See clinic facts and our complaints page.
Frequently asked questions
How long after gynaecomastia surgery can I fly home to South Africa?
The surgeon decides. Most patients are ready to fly after five to seven days, but because the flight home takes around ten hours, South African patients may be asked to stay a little longer.
What is the difference between gynaecomastia surgery and male chest reduction?
Gynaecomastia surgery removes excess glandular tissue and fat, and skin where needed. Male chest reduction mainly removes loose, sagging chest skin after significant weight loss. The surgeon decides which suits you after assessing you.
Can diet and exercise get rid of gynaecomastia?
Fat may reduce with weight loss, but enlarged glandular tissue does not shrink with diet or exercise and has to be removed surgically.
When can I go back to the gym after gynaecomastia surgery?
Heavy lifting, chest workouts and strenuous exercise have to wait until the surgeon approves.
Will my medical aid cover gynaecomastia surgery in Turkey?
Medical schemes generally do not cover elective surgery abroad, and travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment. Check with both before you book.
