Female hormone check in Turkey from South Africa: an honest guide
A female hormone check is a set of blood tests, guided by a medical consultation, that looks at the hormones behind your cycle, fertility, metabolism, mood, energy and bone health. It can help explain irregular periods, symptoms around menopause, unexplained tiredness or difficulty conceiving. This page explains what is usually tested, why the timing matters, and, honestly, when travelling from South Africa for it is worthwhile.
In short: The check starts with a consultation, then blood tests chosen for your age and symptoms, some on specific days of your cycle. Results are usually ready within one to three days and are explained at a follow-up appointment. There is no recovery time. A hormone check on its own rarely justifies the trip from South Africa; it makes most sense combined with planned treatment in İzmir.

Why women have their hormones checked
Common reasons include:
- Irregular, heavy, painful or absent periods
- Possible polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Difficulty conceiving or repeated pregnancy loss
- Hot flushes, night sweats or signs of early menopause
- Persistent tiredness, mood or sleep changes, or changes in libido
- Unexplained weight change, acne, hair thinning or excess hair growth
- Thyroid symptoms or a family history of hormonal disorders
Some women without symptoms choose testing to record baseline levels, monitor changes with age or help with family planning.
What is usually tested
The panel is tailored to you, but often includes:
- Reproductive hormones: oestradiol, progesterone, FSH, LH, AMH (an indicator of ovarian reserve) and testosterone
- Thyroid hormones: TSH, free T3 and free T4
- Others: prolactin, cortisol, and insulin where PCOS or metabolic problems are suspected
Depending on the findings, the doctor may suggest a pelvic ultrasound, a bone density scan or further metabolic blood tests.
Timing matters
Hormone levels change through the cycle, so some tests must be done on particular days: FSH, LH and oestrogen are usually measured on days two to five, ovulation-related hormones mid-cycle, and progesterone around day 21. Some tests need fasting, and blood is usually taken in the morning. If you are travelling from South Africa, share your cycle dates in advance so the visit can be timed correctly, and tell the doctor about any medicines or hormonal treatment, as these can affect results.
Understanding the results
Results are read against your age, cycle phase, symptoms and history, not just a reference range. A single test may not reflect long-term patterns, and testing alone is not a diagnosis. The outcome may be reassurance, mild changes to monitor, or findings that need further investigation or treatment.
Is the trip from South Africa worth it?
Be honest with yourself here. Hormone tests are widely available in South Africa, and any treatment that follows needs monitoring by a doctor at home. Travelling makes most sense if you are already coming to İzmir for planned treatment, for example as part of a fertility assessment; see our female fertility test guide and our IVF guide.
There are direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town to Istanbul of around ten hours, followed by a short domestic flight to İzmir. South Africans need an e-Visa before travelling, and İzmir is only one hour ahead of South Africa.
Ask for printed copies of every result and the doctor’s written interpretation to take home to your GP or gynaecologist. South African medical schemes generally do not cover elective treatment abroad, so check with your scheme before you book, and note that standard travel insurance usually excludes planned treatment abroad.
What we will not do
We will not sell you a large test panel you do not need, we will not interpret results without a consultation, and we will not suggest travelling for a blood test that could be done at home. Practical details are on our clinic facts page, and how problems are handled is explained on our complaints page. For related care, see our women’s health guide. Full medical detail is on the female hormone checkup page.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a female hormone check take in Turkey?
Blood sampling takes only a few minutes. Most results are ready within one to three days, depending on the panel, and are explained at a follow-up appointment.
Do I need to time the visit to my cycle?
Often yes. Some hormones are measured on days two to five of the cycle and progesterone around day 21, so share your cycle dates before you book.
Do I need to stop my medication before testing?
Some medicines and hormonal treatments affect results. Discuss them with the doctor before testing and do not stop anything without advice.
Is hormone testing enough to diagnose a fertility problem?
No. It gives important information, but it is usually one part of a wider fertility assessment that may include ultrasound and other tests.
Is it worth travelling from South Africa just for a hormone check?
Rarely. Hormone tests are available at home. The trip makes most sense when combined with planned treatment or a fuller assessment in İzmir.
